USC's upside-down schedule makes Oregon a trap game

  • LOS ANGELES >> Pete Carroll accomplished many things at USC and one of them was owning November with a 28-1 record. If USC coach Clay Helton wants to tu this season into something more than quarterback Sam Daold’s fantastic freshman season, he needs a November similar to Carroll. It’s not unthinkable with three teams on USC’s remaining schedule (Oregon, UCLA, Notre Dame) currently sporting mediocre 3-5 records. The only tough game appears to be at No. 4-ranked Washington, which is 8-0. This week, USC (5-3, 4-2) is trying hard to ignore the Huskies with Oregon coming to the Coliseum on Saturday. “I haven’t even thought about (playing at Washington),” wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said Tuesday. “I took a visit there and it was pretty cool.” USC’s schedule is upside down. In the past, Oregon would be the huge game and Washington an after thought. But Saturday’s game will be only the second time since 1998 USC has played an Oregon team not ranked in the A,uscis, usc, usc football, uscis case status, usc football schedule, usccb,us cellular, uscho, usc trojans, usc vs alabama ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC's Justin Davis ruled out against Arizona

  • LOS ANGELES >> USC running back Justin Davis, who has a high ankle sprain, will not play on Saturday at Arizona, Trojans head coach Clay Helton announced. Davis was not at practice this week. “He’s still being very tender on the ankle,” Helton said. Through six games, the 6-foot-1 senior leads the Trojans in rushing with 476 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He had 341 yards in the past three games, including consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts against Utah and Arizona State. Davis injured his right ankle in the second half of USC’s 21-17 win over Colorado last Saturday. He left the locker room afterward on crutches. A walking boot was placed on his right foot. “It’s a next-man-up mentality,” Helton said. In place of Davis, sophomore Ronald Jones is expected to start. One season after he set a school single-season freshman rushing record, Jones has not been as productive. He has 208 rushing yards and one touchdown on 46 carries. • Steve Sarkisian joins Alabama football program as analyst

  • Former USC coach Steve Sarkisian is retuing to college football. Sarkisian will join the staff at Alabama as an offensive analyst, the team confirmed Monday. “We’re glad to have him as a part of the organization,” Alabama coach Nick Saban told reporters at a news conference. “Hopefully, he’ll be able to get back on his feet professionally and this will be beneficial to him.” USC fired Sarkisian after five games last October following a string of alcohol-related incidents and other behavior. Sarkisian, 42, filed a multi-million dollar wrongful termination lawsuit against the university in December, alleging he was not allowed to seek treatment for alcoholism. In the complaint, he said he was on a flight to an alcohol treatment facility on Oct. 12 when he was fired by then Athletic Director Pat Haden. The case since moved to arbitration. “We’re going to continue to help him in his program as an organization, and we’ll support him,” Saban said. “And he has an oppo, ...ادامه مطلب

  • No. 1 Alabama routs No. 20 USC

  • By Joey Kaufman [email protected] @JoeyRKaufman on Twitter ARLINGTON, TEXAS >> Early in the fourth quarter on Saturday night, Lane Kiffin offered high-fives to a procession of players from Alabama’s special teams unit who retued from the field. As he met the last of them, tight end Brandon Greene, he hugged Greene by extending his right arm around his neck and pulling him in close. The two enjoyed a brief moment of embrace as Alabama had just pushed its lead over USC to 39 points. Kiffin smiled. He then strode along the sideline. “For him, being successful in his new role, it’s great to see,” senior running back Justin Davis said. It was seemingly a moment of joy for the offensive coordinator who was fired by the same school less than three years ago near a tarmac at LAX. Meanwhile, on the east side of AT&T Stadium, swaths of USC fans retreated to the exits. • USC quarterback Max Browne unsure what to expect facing Alabama

  • Here’s some notes and observations on the eve of the season opener against Alabama: USC quarterback Max Browne candidly admits he has no idea what he will feel when he walks on to the field Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. “I don’t know. I’m sure it will be a lot of jitters,” Browne said. “A lot of nerves. But I think at the end of the day, a lot of excitement. I’m ready to go. I’m ready to finally play ball. But once again I don’t know what to really expect.” Browne said it sometimes felt like his first start would never happen. “I’ve almost been here for four calendar years now,” he said. “If you tell me that my first start would come this late, obviously back then it makes sense, but it’s a long time.” • Perhaps no one will feel more emotion facing Alabama than USC running backs coach Tommie Robinson. • USC LB Osa Masina investigated for sexual assault, won't play in Alabama game

  • Suspended USC linebacker Osa Masina is under investigation by the Cottonwood Heights police department in Utah for an alleged sexual assault, a spokesman confirmed Tuesday. The investigation was first reported by a Fox affiliate television station in Salt Lake City. The alleged incident occurred in Salt Lake County in July. USC coach Clay Helton announced on Monday that Masina would not travel with the Trojans for their season opener on Saturday against top-ranked Alabama in Arlington, Texas, due to an unspecified violation of team rules. Investigators from the Los Angeles police department were on campus last week and are working with Cottonwood Heights police on the investigation, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Dan Bartlett. Bartlett said he met with Masina on campus for an hour last week and a search warrant had been issued. Masina, a sophomore, finished with 25 tackles and a fumble retu for a touchdown in 12 games last season. He was co-listed with Quinton Powell as the bac, ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC's Osa Masina will not travel with team to Alabama

  • LOS ANGELES >> USC reserve inside linebacker Osa Masina will not travel with the team for the season opener against Alabama because of an unspecified violation of team rules, Coach Clay Helton announced Monday on the Trojans live weekly radio show. Masina, a sophomore, was co-listed with Quinton Powell as the backup for Mitchael Hutchings on the team’s depth chart released last week. Last season, he had 25 tackles in 12 games. It was expected he would see a role this season. In training camp, Masina worked in with the first-team defense at times. He is the second USC player to be suspended for the first game against Alabama, following Isaiah Langley, a reserve coerback. Langley was arrested at a UCLA frateity party in early May on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, providing false information and trespassing, a police spokesperson said. • Alabama, USC coaching hires have parallels and struggles

  • It’s 33 steps to the top of the observation tower sitting by the football fields in Tuscaloosa, Ala. It long marked Bear Bryant’s perch. Bryant routinely gazed out from the tower to watch practices, images of him peering down serving as some of the lasting snapshots of a legendary coach who led the Crimson Tide to six national championships in a 25-year tenure. Then they took it down. When Bryant retired after the 1982 season, successor Ray Perkins no longer saw its need. The practice tower was dismantled in his first season. “Some felt it bordered on near sacrilege to remove the edifice,” the Tuscaloosa News reported at the time. A few years later, when Perkins had left and Bill Curry stepped in as the Crimson Tide’s headman, Curry fielded a phone call from Ellis Taylor, one of Bryant’s closest friends. Taylor pushed for the tower’s reconstruction. “You need to put that thing up as fast as you can,” he told him. Curry laughed. “Well, how soon are you going to let , ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC Trojans run dress rehearsal for Alabama

  • LOS ANGELES >> The last Saturday before USC’s season opener against Alabama included a 50-play, full-pads scrimmage at an off-campus location. The Trojans ran 40 plays of offense and defense, with 10 more on special teams. It featured thud tackling, where players do not bring each other to the ground. To simulate a typical game week, they practiced Friday, stayed together in a hotel, held meetings, went through a walk through Saturday moing and took a bus to the field. “We tried to make it the most realistic thing you could,” USC coach Clay Helton said. Helton did not specify where the team held its scrimmage, citing compliance reasons. Max Browne, the recently named starting quarterback, took three-fourths of the reps with the first-team offense. Sam Daold mixed in, as well. Of particular note, it marked a certain test point for senior left tackle Chad Wheeler, who has not practiced in more than two weeks because of planar fasciitis. • Clay Helton says USC starting QB will be named 2 weeks before Alabama opener

  • USC will name a starting quarterback two weeks before its season opener against Alabama, Coach Clay Helton said Thursday at Pac-12 Media Days. Helton plans to release a two-deep depth chart when fall camp ends after 18 practices, settling at that point on Max Browne or Sam Daold, the two signal callers who began vying for the starting job in the spring. “I think it’ll be sufficient time to name a starting quarterback,” said Helton, whose team is replacing a three-year starter in Cody Kessler. The Trojans open against the Crimson Tide on Sept. 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The first-year coach opted against picking between Browne, a redshirt junior, and Daold, a redshirt freshman, when spring camp concluded in April. Browne, though, is considered to have a slight edge. “If we had the spring game then had to play a game that next Saturday, it would have been Max,” Helton said Thursday from Hollywood and Highland, “but that window was so tight. If I’m going to say that at every other position, that it’s about competition, it has to start at the quarterback.” Neither has significant experience in college. Daold redshirted as a freshman last fall. Browne threw a total of 19 passes the past two seasons as the backup to Kessler. The 6-foot-5 quarterback completed 11 of 19 for 143 yards without a touchdown or interception. There is a possibility Browne could transfer elsewhere and play immediately without penalty, because he has already graduated. Classes for USC’s fall semester start Aug. 22, falling a few days after Helton’s timetable to name a starting quarter. Helton acknowledged the possibility, but sounded unconceed about Browne’s potential departure. “There’s always that reality,” he said. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to play the best player and who’s performing the best. You can’t look at your other players in the eye and not play the best player. “If you’re not playing the best player and losing games, they usually find a new head coach. So it, ...ادامه مطلب
