USC happy Christian McCaffrey is gone but slowing Stanford is still no cinch

  • Nneka Ogwumike's MVP performance boosts Sparks to playoff-opening win

  • LONG BEACH >> The second-seeded Sparks are hoping that the WNBA playoffs end with a championship team trophy. Wednesday night at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid, they began the postseason with some individual hardware. Nneka Ogwumike was awarded the WNBA’s MVP trophy in a pregame ceremony and then spent the next 40 minutes proving why she deserved it as she led the Sparks to a 95-75 win over the fourth-seeded Chicago Sky. “It was great,” she said. “It’s been nothing but love the last few days. It’s been awesome, and this was a great way to start off our run.” Ogwumike, who finished the regular season with the second-highest shooting percentage in WNBA history (66.5 percent) was sensational from start to finish. She had 27 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and a steal, showing off her complete game. The boost Ogwumike brought was emotional as much as it was statistical. • UCLA learns from Stanford loss

  • LOS ANGELES >> UCLA’s last-second loss to Stanford was crushing for the Bruins. TV cameras caught linebakcer Jayon Brown kneeling on the sideline after the clock expired with a shocked look on his face. Defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes shouted expletives in frustration. Head coach Jim Mora had never seen this team more devastated than when he saw it at the Rose Bowl after the Cardinal scored the game-winning touchdown with 24 seconds left. Then the clock struck on UCLA’s 24-hour grieving period. The Bruins finished their correction period on Sunday and went to their regularly scheduled team dinner. They promised each other they would smile again. They promised they would rebound. “The one thing about young men this age is that they are resilient and they do get over things quickly and they will move on,” Mora said. “But we’ll move on with lessons leaed, which is always important.” With division foe Arizona (2-2, 0-1 Pac-12) coming to the Rose Bowl this Saturday, ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC, Stanford face off for women's water polo national championship

  • The first words out of the USC huddle after a 9-6 semifinal win over Michigan in the NCAA women’s water polo touament on Saturday were simple: “One more.” After 25 straight wins, the Trojans have eyes for one more that would complete a perfect season and cap the year with a national championship. To achieve perfection, USC will have to knock off two-time defending national champion Stanford, which punched its ticket to the title match with a 7-4 win over UCLA in the other semifinal. USC and Stanford, who have combined to win the past six national championships, will play for the title today at 5:30 p.m. at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center. The two West Coach powers faced each other three times this year, with USC winning all three by a combined score of 23-14. USC most recently knocked off Stanford for the MPSF conference title on May 1. “(To beat USC) it’s going to take four quarters when we stay together and keep up that energy and that poise,” said Stanford goalie Julia Hermann, who had eight saves against UCLA. “And just the trust we have in each other, that’s something huge that’s going for our team: We’re really a unit. As long as we stay together as a unit, we can get there.” Stanford knocked UCLA out of the NCAA touament for the third straight year on Saturday, as the Cardinal pulled away late behind stellar saves from Hermann. Hermann and the Stanford defense kept the Bruins scoreless in the fourth quarter. “Julia was sensational, just a terrific game,” Stanford head coach John Tanner said. Stanford led by two goals at halftime, but UCLA’s Mackenzie Barr scored twice on power plays in the third quarter as the Bruins entered the final period trailing by one. However, the Cardinal put the game away behind fourth-quarter goals from Madison Berggren and Jamie Neushul. “We fought as hard as we could, and we weren’t good enough,” Barr said. USC continues bid The No. 1-ranked Trojans got out to a 2-0 lead, but Michigan used a stout defense to gain momentum. As they , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Michael Humphrey leads Stanford over UCLA in Pac-12 basketball

  • STANFORD >> Michael Humphrey shoots pregame free throws to get his shot right. He accomplished that, making every kind of shot known to a post player and a couple more he invented on the spot. It’s his free throws that might need work. Humphrey scored 24 points, Rosco Allen added 19, including a clutch 3-pointer, and Stanford beat UCLA 79-70 Saturday. “He was a beast. He did a great job, our bigs couldn’t keep him in front,” Bruins coach Steve Alford said. “He got around our bigs a lot, and then he faced up and our bigs were too far off. We told them “17-foot range,” and from 17 feet in he hurt us. He hurt us with catch and shoot, he hurt us with catch and drive.” The sophomore was 12 of 14 from the field, making shots with guys draped over him, falling down, fading away, from 17 feet out and on putbacks. But he missed all four of his free throws. “I’ve been working on my shots and I felt good from the line,” Humphrey said. “I felt like I had a good feel for the basket.” Dorian Pickens, who also hit a key 3-pointer, added 16 points for the Cardinal (15-12, 8-8 Pac-12), who won their fourth in five games. Bryce Alford scored 20 points and Isaac Hamilton added 19 points for UCLA (15-14, 6-10), which has lost five of seven. Thomas Welsh added 11 points. “Same old stuff. We’ve got to figure out what we have to do,” Bryce Alford said. “As a team, we’re kind of a lost cause right now. We’re trying to stay together and that’s the hardest part.” Pickens and Allen hit consecutive 3-pointers with the shot clock winding down, giving Stanford a 78-64 lead into the final minute of play. Humphrey hit a jumper with 14:01 remaining to put the Cardinal ahead, 49-41. Alford hit a 3-pointer from the coer to bring UCLA within 64-62 with just over six minutes left. Allen scored the next four points and Pickens hit a pair of free throws while the Bruins missed four straight, allowing the Cardinal some breathing room with just under four minutes to play. • Stanford's 29-6 run in first half dooms USC

  • STANFORD, Calif. — Dorian Pickens scored 22 of his career-high 25 points in the first half and Stanford beat USC 84-64 on Thursday night. Rosco Allen added 17 points, Marcus Allen had 15 and Michael Humphrey had 10, all in the second half, as the Cardinal (14-12, 7-8 Pac-12) won their third in four games. Katin Reinhardt scored 14 points to lead the Trojans (19-9, 8-7), who have lost four of five after opening conference play winning 7 of 10. Bennie Boatwright added 11 and Elijah Stewart had 10. USC, coming off its first home loss Sunday, was held to a season-low in points and were held under 70 for the fourth time, three in its last five. Pickens came off the bench a fourth consecutive game after 12 starts. He’s averaging 16 points during that stretch. The Trojans never got closer than 18 points in the second half as Stanford led by as many as 28 at one point. The Trojans held an early 14-11 advantage following Reinhardt’s jumper. Stanford responded with a 29-6 run to open a 20-point advantage. Pickens hit four 3-pointers during the run, all in a span of 2 minutes, 26 minutes. He was 8 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 7 from long range. He also matched Humphrey for the team lead in rebounds with six. • Long Beach State men's volleyball tops Stanford

  • The No. 2 Long Beach State men’s volleyball team defended its home court in style on Friday night, topping No. 6 Stanford in four sets behind an excellent team performance, dropping the first set but coming back to win 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23. The Cardinal looked unstoppable in the first frame, as Long Beach had seven hitting errors and hit just .179. But the Beach led comfortably for most of the rest of the match, and were able to come through in the clutch even when Stanford made it close. T.J. DeFalco’s kill on match point so frustrated the Cardinal that Conrad Kaminski whipped off his jersey and spiked it on the court after the ball landed. 49ers head coach Alan Knipe said he’s glad that the early battles of the season are paying off for his team. “You talk about how to get battle-tested and resilient, it’s playing BYU twice in 24 hours, it’s going five sets against UCLA and UC Santa Barbara in one week,” he said. The Beach was led by Kyle Ensing’s 14 kills and eight digs, and DeFalco’s 14 kills. Long Beach State (8-2, 5-2 MPSF) will host No. 9 Pepperdine in the Pyramid on Saturday night. Boys basketball ST. JOHN BOSCO 50, VILLAGE CHRISTIAN 47 >> J.J. Watson scored 19 points and Eduardo Dalla Torre added 12 points and 12 rebounds as the St. John Bosco boys basketball team defeated Sun Valley Village Christian in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High. “These games are so hard,” Braves coach Matt Dunn said. “It’s in the middle of league and you don’t have a lot of time to prepare, but we took better shots in the second half.” Bosco (17-7) trailed Village Christian (18-8) 29-17 at half, but outscored the Crusaders 21-8 in the third to take a 39-38 lead into the fourth. The Braves fell behind 42-41 with under three minutes to play before two straight baskets from Makani Whiteside and a layup from JoJo Bush made it a 47-42 lead with 1:30 to play. Bosco struggled to close the game out, but two free throws from Nikko Hall with 7.8 seconds left sealed the win, ...ادامه مطلب
