UCLA offensive lineman Michael Alves makes case for starting role

  • LOS ANGELES >> A text from UCLA offensive line coach Hank Fraley flashed across Michael Alves’ phone screen. “You’re going with the ones tomorrow,” it read. Instead of being excited about his promotion from second-string guard to the first group, Alves was conceed. “Is someone injured or something?” the redshirt freshman recalls thinking after hearing of the change. But it wasn’t an injury that shook up UCLA’s once-solid No. 1 offensive line. It was Alves’ consistent improvement. He’s practiced as the No. 1 right guard for the past week, but knows nothing is settled when it comes to wh, ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC's upside-down schedule makes Oregon a trap game

  • LOS ANGELES >> Pete Carroll accomplished many things at USC and one of them was owning November with a 28-1 record. If USC coach Clay Helton wants to tu this season into something more than quarterback Sam Daold’s fantastic freshman season, he needs a November similar to Carroll. It’s not unthinkable with three teams on USC’s remaining schedule (Oregon, UCLA, Notre Dame) currently sporting mediocre 3-5 records. The only tough game appears to be at No. 4-ranked Washington, which is 8-0. This week, USC (5-3, 4-2) is trying hard to ignore the Huskies with Oregon coming to the Coliseum on Saturday. “I haven’t even thought about (playing at Washington),” wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said Tuesday. “I took a visit there and it was pretty cool.” USC’s schedule is upside down. In the past, Oregon would be the huge game and Washington an after thought. But Saturday’s game will be only the second time since 1998 USC has played an Oregon team not ranked in the A,uscis, usc, usc football, uscis case status, usc football schedule, usccb,us cellular, uscho, usc trojans, usc vs alabama ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC's Justin Davis ruled out against Arizona

  • LOS ANGELES >> USC running back Justin Davis, who has a high ankle sprain, will not play on Saturday at Arizona, Trojans head coach Clay Helton announced. Davis was not at practice this week. “He’s still being very tender on the ankle,” Helton said. Through six games, the 6-foot-1 senior leads the Trojans in rushing with 476 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He had 341 yards in the past three games, including consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts against Utah and Arizona State. Davis injured his right ankle in the second half of USC’s 21-17 win over Colorado last Saturday. He left the locker room afterward on crutches. A walking boot was placed on his right foot. “It’s a next-man-up mentality,” Helton said. In place of Davis, sophomore Ronald Jones is expected to start. One season after he set a school single-season freshman rushing record, Jones has not been as productive. He has 208 rushing yards and one touchdown on 46 carries. • Rams haven't carried Case Keenum, he's been leading them

  • GLENDALE, Ariz. >> In the third quarter Case Keenum saw daylight, even indoors. He ran through the bad-intentioned Cardinals for 27 yards, and a first down on the Arizona eight. Hold everything. Penalty on Rams’ tackle Greg Robinson, for holding. In the fourth quarter Keenum felt the ceiling descending on him, and he took off, stutter-stepped, doubled back, kept hoofing, and lobbed a 27-yarder to Lance Kendricks that took the ball to the Arizona 12 and put a broad smile on the face of Fran Tarkenton, wherever he was watching. Hold everything. Penalty on Rams’ tackle Greg Robinson, illegal receiver downfield. “I was out of breath when I was calling the next play,” Keenum said. “I felt kinda foolish, running back 40 yards to where it started.” Somewhere between those two forfeited moments, and the end of the Rams’ 17-13 win over the Cardinals on Sunday, you remembered what everybody said. • USC's Toa Lobendahn out for season with knee injury again

  • LOS ANGELES >> USC junior center Toa Lobendahn will miss the rest of the season after tearing both the medial collateral ligament and anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, USC football coach Clay Helton said Thursday. Lobendahn missed the second half of last season following surgery to repair a to ACL in his left knee. He also had surgery on his right knee at La Habra High School. Lobendahn sustained the most recent knee injury in the first quarter against Alabama last Saturday, though stayed in for the rest of the game. “The warrior that he is, he didn’t even complain about it,” Helton said. Surgery was performed Thursday and was successful, according to Helton. He told the team at a meeting before practice. The previous day, Lobendahn underwent an MRI that showed an MCL tear. Doctors later performed a scope that found the ACL was to, as well. • Case Keenum will be the Rams starting QB; Jared Goff is inactive for week 1

  • The coaches have decided and the players have voted. The Rams have a quarterback plan for the first week. It’s not one that most thought probable a few months ago, but it’s a plan nonetheless. Case Keenum will start, as had been all but assured throughout training camp, and on Tuesday, Coach Jeff Fisher announced that teammates voted Keenum as one of their five team captains. And not only will rookie Jared Goff not start, he likely won’t even be in uniform for Monday’s opener at San Francisco. Fisher strongly hinted last week that Sean Mannion, not Goff, would be his season-opening backup quarterback. Given that NFL teams can only activate 46 players for a game, dressing three quarterbacks makes little sense for most teams. Fisher confirmed to NFL Network on Tuesday that Goff would not be a part of the plan for the San Francisco game, but left open the possibility that he could flip the quarterbacks for the second game, against Seattle, and have Goff as the backup and Mannion ,case keenum will start, will case keenum start this week, will case keenum start against the jaguars, will case keenum start sunday, will case keenum play ...ادامه مطلب

  • USC's Osa Masina will not travel with team to Alabama

  • LOS ANGELES >> USC reserve inside linebacker Osa Masina will not travel with the team for the season opener against Alabama because of an unspecified violation of team rules, Coach Clay Helton announced Monday on the Trojans live weekly radio show. Masina, a sophomore, was co-listed with Quinton Powell as the backup for Mitchael Hutchings on the team’s depth chart released last week. Last season, he had 25 tackles in 12 games. It was expected he would see a role this season. In training camp, Masina worked in with the first-team defense at times. He is the second USC player to be suspended for the first game against Alabama, following Isaiah Langley, a reserve coerback. Langley was arrested at a UCLA frateity party in early May on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, providing false information and trespassing, a police spokesperson said. • USC's Damien Mama, Chris Brown battling to start at left guard

  • LOS ANGELES — On Sunday, as USC prepared to enter its first “mock game week,” it released a two-deep chart and seemed to have settled on most of the position battles from camp. Some, though, will carry over into the remaining days before the season opens against Alabama on Sept. 3 in Arlington, Texas. Of particular note, the Trojans remain in search of a starting left guard. That spot will fall on the shoulders of either redshirt sophomore Chris Brown or junior Damien Mama, who were co-listed there on the depth chart. Neither has pulled ahead as each player has worked at various times this month with the first-team offense. Brown at one point had an edge. He took most of the first-team reps in the first week of camp. Coach Clay Helton had said he eaed that “honor” after outplaying Mama during spring practice. • HBO 'Hard Knocks' Episode 3: Making a case for Case Keenum

  • Da, if Case Keenum isn’t a thoughtful, intelligent and funny guy. If you happened to stumble upon a 10-minute interview the current Rams’ No. 1 quarterback did with Fred Roggin and Leeann Tweeden during the Tuesday afteoon “L.A. Today” show on KLAC-AM (570), that should have come across more than a couple of times. But if asked to measure your interest or likeability of Keenum based on what you’ve seen through the first couple episodes of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” you may have little to no opinion at all. Leading up to Tuesday’s middle installment of the five-part series, the recurring storyline each week is some variation on: How long will it be before No. 1 overall pick and rookie Jared Goff is ready to be the top QB? • Sam Darnold making case for Trojans' starting QB job

  • LOS ANGELES >> The pass from Sam Daold fluttered in the late Wednesday afteoon sunshine. Daold spotted JuJu Smith-Schuster running untouched along the west sideline of Howard Jones Field and threw the ball downfield about 35 yards. Smith-Schuster waited, corralled it and barreled through a defensive back for a touchdown. USC’s first full-pads scrimmage of training camp started smoothly for the redshirt freshman quarterback. Not only did Daold connect with Smith-Schuster for the touchdown on his 11th pass attempt, but he completed his first eight passes after the team broke for the live 11-on-11 portion of practice. The ninth went down as an incompletion only because he spiked it to avoid a sack. When the final ho sounded, Daold finished 15-of-21 passing with a touchdown. He also ran for a score. Daold has continued to build a case to be named the Trojans’ starting quarterback when their season opens next month against Alabama. And at least on this day, there se, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Appeals court upholds Adrian Peterson's suspension in 2014 case

  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s power to freely punish Adrian Peterson has prevailed, two seasons after the Minnesota running back became embroiled in a child-abuse case that heightened the dispute over league discipline. A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that an NFL arbitrator acted within his rights by upholding Goodell’s six-game suspension of Peterson in 2014. That came under the personal conduct policy the league toughened up following a brutal act of caught-on-video domestic violence committed by Baltimore running back Ray Rice. The 8th Circuit ruling overrode the decision issued Feb. 26, 2015, by U.S. District Judge David Doty that found NFL arbitrator Harold Henderson overreached his authority in handling the NFL Players Association’s appeal on behalf of Peterson. Appellate judges James Loken, Diana Murphy and Steven Colloton heard the league’s arguments Oct. 19, 2015. “The dispositive question is whether the arbitrator was at least arguably construing or applying the contract, including the law of the shop,” Colloton wrote for the panel. “The arbitrator here undoubtedly construed the Rice decision in reaching his decision. Disagreement with his conclusion is not a valid ground on which to vacate the decision.” The NFL had no immediate comment on the ruling, issued about 27 months after the injuries to Peterson’s then-4-year-old son were reported. The NFLPA issued a statement of resignation. “Our union pursues all claims because we believe in due process, fundamental faiess and in the spirit of collective bargaining agreements. While the NFLPA disagrees with the decision, we accept this loss,” the union said. “When negotiation or collective bargaining fails to resolve our differences, we will always fight and pursue every recourse for our players’ rights.” Waiting game The Dallas Cowboys are in no rush to get a veteran quarterback behind Tony Romo, even though executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones h, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Jared Goff-Case Keenum competition to highlight Rams training camp

  • IRVINE >> Now, with the Rams settled in Southe Califoia, the question can be asked: Are these guys any good? Evidence will begin presenting itself Saturday, with the first of 21 training-camp practices at UC Irvine. Most sessions are open and free to the public, so fans can opine as to whether offseason upgrades to the offense will be enough to improve a team that went 7-8-1, 7-9, 6-10 and 7-9 in its previous four seasons. That type of rigid consistency is valued in the military but not in the NFL, where it leads to firings. The contracts of Rams coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead expire after this season, so there’s pressure, and it’s amplified because the Rams want to build upon the excitement of their relocation. “The coaches, their jobs are on the line, so it’s critical to them, and our jobs are on the line,” starting left tackle Greg Robinson said this week. “I think we’re going to step it up a little bit more.” The season opener, Sept. 12 at San Francisco, remains six weeks away, but things will go fast. The Rams play their first of four preseason games on Aug. 13 at the Coliseum, against Dallas. Perhaps by then, some clarity will develop when it comes to the Rams’ intriguing position battles. The Rams’ defense, led by tackle Aaron Donald and linebacker Alec Ogletree, seems fairly settled, other than a competition at free safety and perhaps some depth-chart jockeying at coerback. The real battle will be under center, and every practice will be scrutinized to determine whether No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff should unseat Case Keenum as the Rams quarterback. The Rams retained Rob Boras as their full-time offensive coordinator, hired Mike Groh as a passing-game coordinator and drafted two receivers and two tight ends. It’s no stretch to think that the Rams’ ability to break .500 and make the playoffs for the first time since 2004 depends on offensive improvements. “You can sit here and make goals and talk about the division and conferenc, ...ادامه مطلب
