ANAHEIM>> Although the Angels are finally getting the kind of starting pitching they need, they are nonetheless slipping in the wild card race. Despite a fourth consecutive game in which the Angels starter gave up two runs or fewer in at least five iings, the Angels were losing, 5-2, to the Houston Astros in the ninth iing at press time on Thursday night. The Angels were in jeopardy of f...

SEATTLE — If the Angels hope to get to the postseason, they are going to have to reverse this trend with their starting pitchers. Ricky Nolasco provided the latest disappointing performance, allowing four runs in 3⅔ iings in the Angels’ 4-3 loss to the Seattle Marinerson Fridaynight. Angels starters have a 6.53 ERA in the last 20 games. The work of the bullpen and the offense has kept them fro...

OAKLAND >> This time, Garrett Richards walked off the mound alone, perhaps only disappointed at the hanging slider he’d just thrown. It was better than the last time he’d walked off the mound at the Oakland Coliseum, that time accompanied by trainer Eric Munson. Although no one knew it at the time, it would be the start of a five-month hiatus for the Angels’ ace because of biceps nerve irrit...

PITTSBURGH >> Clayton Kershaw should be happy. His back injury was less serious than might have been feared when he left his July 23 start. He has retued to health relatively quickly. And his team is so far out front that it can afford to take it slowly with him, giving him a long runway to retu to the rotation with bullets saved for October. Oh, yeah — that last part doesn’t seem to sit well with the Dodgers ace. “Health-wise, I could have pitched in the big leagues 10 days ago. But that’s not the plan obviously,” Kershaw said Monday after throwing a four-iing simulated game at PN...

PACIFIC PALISADES >> Eddie Merrins stood just off to the side of the 18th green at Riviera Country Club late Sunday afteoon, perhaps not even noticing that Doc Redman and Doug Ghim went right behind him with a purpose toward the 10th tee box at the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship. “That’s about as strong a finish as you’d hope to see,” said the 84-year-old legendary golf pro at Bel-Air Country Club and former UCLA coach who, in 1954, made it to the quarterfinals in a touament won by Aold Palmer. The thing was, this edition of the oldest USGA touament wasn’t even finished. Redman...

LOS ANGELES >> A text from UCLA offensive line coach Hank Fraley flashed across Michael Alves’ phone screen. “You’re going with the ones tomorrow,” it read. Instead of being excited about his promotion from second-string guard to the first group, Alves was conceed. “Is someone injured or something?” the redshirt freshman recalls thinking after hearing of the change. But it wasn’t an injury that shook up UCLA’s once-solid No. 1 offensive line. It was Alves’ consistent improvement. He’s practiced as the No. 1 right guard for the past week, but knows nothing is settled when it comes to wh...
