THOUSAND OAKS >> No dramatic moment, no speech, no loud applause. The Rams simply conducted their defensive meetings Monday with Aaron Donald in attendance, and that normalcy had to feel superb. Donald, the Rams’ star lineman who ended his six-week contract holdout Saturday, got back to work at team headquarters. The plan, according to Coach Sean McVay, is for Donald to be on the field when...
ادامه مطلبEven before his first regular-season game, Rams Coach Sean McVay showed he won’t be afraid to delegate responsibilities. McVay, formerly the offensive coordinator in Washington, aounced shortly after his hire in January that he would call plays for the Rams, but McVay said Sunday that his offensive coordinator, Matt LaFleur, called plays during the second half of Saturday’s preseason victory over Oakland. Most notably, LaFleur, formerly the quarterbacks coach in Atlanta, called plays when the Rams drove for the game-wiing touchdown in the final minutes against the Raiders. “He made some g...

ادامه مطلبA brief look at the Rams’ training-camp practice on Thursday: BIG MOMENT It’s been a nice week for the Rams’ receivers. First, Sammy Watkins showed up and made some nice catches, and rookie Josh Reynolds flashed some moves. On the last official day of training camp, one of the veterans stood out, as Robert Woods made a couple nice catches in traffic, including one long ball for a touchdown. INJURY REPORT Coach Sean McVay didn’t offer an official list in advance of Saturday’s preseason game at Oakland, but it seems likely that the players who were held out for most of practice this week won’t p...

Same old Rams, right? RELATED • Whicker: Rams aren’t carrying Keenum, he’s been the leader • Tavon Austin delivers magic moment Not so fast. The Rams are 3-1 and in first place in their division, and with the Buffalo Bills coming to town this week they have a legitimate chance to open their first season in L.A. 4-1. Hold everything. Penalty on Rams’ tackle Greg Robinson, for holding. In the fourth quarter Keenum felt the ceiling descending on him, and he took off, stutter-stepped, doubled back, kept hoofing, and lobbed a 27-yarder to Lance Kendricks that took the ball to the Arizona 12 and put a broad smile on the face of Fran Tarkenton, wherever he was watching. Hold everything. Penalty on Rams’ tackle Greg Robinson, illegal receiver downfield. “I was out of breath when I was calling the next play,” Keenum said. “I felt kinda f...

ادامه مطلبQUARTERBACK This one already has been analyzed just a bit. The Rams have followed through on their promise not to rush No. 1 pick Jared Goff, and that was wise, so for now, the starting job remains in the hands of the capable but unspectacular Case Keenum. The Rams talked all offseason about an upgrade at quarterback, but they didn’t get one, at least not yet. RUNNING BACK Todd Gurley is a star, and a strong bet to exceed his 1,100-yard 2015 season, but perhaps the Rams should keep his knees and ankles protected by bubble wrap. Backup Bey Cuingham had only 37 carries last season and nobody behind Cuingham has any NFL experience carrying the ball. That’s a bit scary for a run-heavy offense. R...
ادامه مطلبThe coaches have decided and the players have voted. The Rams have a quarterback plan for the first week. It’s not one that most thought probable a few months ago, but it’s a plan nonetheless. Case Keenum will start, as had been all but assured throughout training camp, and on Tuesday, Coach Jeff Fisher aounced that teammates voted Keenum as one of their five team captains. And not only will rookie Jared Goff not start, he likely won’t even be in uniform for Monday’s opener at San Francisco. Fisher strongly hinted last week that Sean Maion, not Goff, would be his season-opening backup quarterback. Given that NFL teams can only activate 46 players for a game, dressing three quarterbacks makes...
ادامه مطلبLOS ANGELES — A taxpayer lawsuit will be filed today against the city of Los Angeles alleging an unlawful “gift of public funds” to the Los Angeles Rams in the form of security at home games. The lawsuit will be filed by former Los Angeles City Councilmember Deis Zine and Los Angeles resident James Bibeau “to prevent the city from expending any additional taxpayer funds to provide over 200 LAPD officers free of charge to secure Rams home games,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Protective League. “Rams owner Stan Kroenke has refused to pay in full for the police services necessary to ensure public safety at his team’s home games,” the statement said. “This free use of LAP...
ادامه مطلبDENVER >> Jared Goff’s awkward samba toward the Rams’ starting quarterback job, a dance that might not end soon, had a couple deft steps Saturday, along with some two-left-feet stumbles. The Rams’ 17-9 preseason loss to Denver, at Sports Authority Field, seemingly didn’t add much clarity to the team’s quarterback derby, and with time ruing short, that’s good news for starter Case Keenum. Asked, after the game, if he felt the need to make any changes to the quarterback depth chart, Coach Jeff Fisher said, “No. We said it’s going to be a process and take time for Jared. He’s going to benefit from the fact that we’re taking time. He will get a chance to play again next week.” Otherwise, there w...
ادامه مطلبLOS ANGELES >> The Rams’ locker room has a story to tell, just like a totem pole. Guys with their own lockers probably are OK. Guys who are splitting lockers with other guys might or might not be OK. Then there’s The Closet. You walk out of the main room and take a left, into what will probably be used as a storage facility when the Rams get down to a working regular-season number. There were about 20 Rams dressing in The Closet Saturday night, their clothes on chairs, getting in and out just to beat the claustrophobia. No one has to tell these residents of The Closet that most of them won’t be hangering around. After all, they wouldn’t be in there if they weren’t spare parts. But there is a...
ادامه مطلبLA QUINTA >> The oldest living Ram is Jim Hardy. He’s been too busy living to notice. Every week Hardy drives two hours to watch USC practice. He quarterbacked two Rose Bowl victories for the Trojans, in 1944 and 1945. He and his wife Henrietta, whom he calls Hank, don’t miss USC home games either. He is 93. He drives, without glasses. He takes not one single pill. “My blood pressure is real low,” he said. He can sit in his handsome house at the La Quinta Golf Estates, and pull up obscure names from more than 60 years ago, as he did Wednesday. As the former general manager of the Coliseum Commission, he’s glad the Rams are back there. And he seems determined to stick around until USC wins an...

Now he clutched the hand of his 5-year-old son, Evan, and squeezed into its narrow tuel jammed with fans. And emerged into the great bowl of cheering retuing Ramdom. “It felt like home,” said Artis, 36, a registered nurse who lives in Echo Park, of last Saturday’s preseason game, which drew a record-breaking 89,140 fans. “It b...
ادامه مطلبLOS ANGELES >> By not showing up, Tre Mason made a huge impact on the Rams’ ruing-back battle in training camp. If Mason had not been arrested in March, to start an apparently sad, complicated saga in his life, the Rams’ depth chart would have been fairly well set with Todd Gurley, Mason and Bey Cuingham. That’s a mix of speed and power that would have made it tough for anyone else to crack the rotation. Instead, more than halfway through training camp, there’s intriguing flux, and heading into Saturday’s preseason game between the Rams and Kansas City Chiefs, there’s at least one job to be won. “I want the best backs to be on the roster, no matter who that is,” Cuingham said this week. “You...

Southe Califoia rock music fans from the 1970s and ‘80s grew up with the exuberant and iconic KMET radio personality – “Whoo-ya!” – who jokingly took his nickname from the toxic weed killer in the news 40 years ago because of how it was a health hazard to unwitting marijuana users (Kelley was not one). But what’s really in a name? Kelley. As in Bob Kelley, the Rams’ well-known play-by-play man from the moment the team arrived in Los Angeles in 1946 and the radio voice through the ‘50s and ‘60s on the old KMPC-AM 710 signal. That’s Patrick “Paraquat” Kelley’s da...
