Area Roundup: Wilson boys golf wins CIF-SS team title

Wilson High won its second consecutive CIF Southern Division Team boys golf championship Monday at Mile Square Golf Course in Fountain Valley. The Bruins won their 20th CIF-SS boys golf championship in school history with a score of 371. Los Alamitos finished second at 372.

“We had a few players struggling early in their rounds, but everyone kept grinding all the way to the end, which proved to be the difference,” Wilson coach Jeff Evans said.

Los Al and Wilson both advanced to the CIF-SS Team Qualifier on Thursday at Rancho San Marcos Golf Club in Santa Barbara.

Boys tennis

HARVARD WESTLAKE 10, LOS ALAMITOS 8 >> The Griffins (13-5) almost pulled off the upset over the second-seeded Wolverines (23-2) in the Division 1 quarterfinals but fell after the match was tied at 6 heading into the final round.

“This team plays with a lot of heart,” Los Al coach Jordan Bridge said.

The Griffins lost to the Wolverines 16-2 earlier in the season.

GAHR 10, ARROWHEAD CHRISTIAN 8 >> Sophomore Chris Rasch went 2-1 in singles for the Gladiators (14-4), who will face California in the Division 5 semifinals on Wednesday.

DOWNEY 11, LAGUNA BLANCA 7 >> The Vikings (15-4) will face either Los Osos or Oak Hills in the Division 4 semifinals.

Swimming

Warren senior Megan Henry medaled in four events at the CIF Division 4 finals on Saturday. Henry raced in the 200-yard medley relay, the 50 free, 200 free relay and the 100 breaststroke. Earlier in the year, Henry broke two SGVL league records with times of 25.35 in the 50 free and 1:12:53 in the 100 breaststroke. She has signed with Cal Baptist to play water polo.

College baseball

College track and field

Kemonie Briggs and Riley Cooks were named men’s and wome’s athlete of the meet at the 2017 Big West championships on Saturday. The duo led Long Beach State, which came away with a third-place finish on the men’s side and a fourth-place showing on the women’s side. Cooks won the heptathlon (5.671 points) and long jump (19 feet, 9 1/2 inches) while Briggs won the long jump (25-8 1/4) and also placed second in the 400 (47.16) and third in the 200 (21.37).
