For the first time since 2006, the “Milk Bucket” is headed back to Mayfair as the Monsoons (3-0) beat Lakewood (0-3), 21-18, at Ron Yary Stadium.

“This is the biggest win in 30 years,” Mayfair coach Derek Bedell told the team. “We have a lot of things to work on but we are going to celebrate first.”

It was a back-and-forth game in the first half as both teams had multiple miscues and penalties, with the Monsoons leading, 14-6, at the break. After a Lancers touchdown, running back Andrew Martinez ran up the middle for 14 yards to push the lead to nine with just under 2 minutes left in the third. The game remained 21-12 until Lancers quarterback Yesmar Tatum connected with Morrise White with a little under 30 seconds left in the game.

“We have some things that we have to fix,” Bedell said. “Quite frankly, Lakewood played their tails off and they should be commended. We had to fight it out in the end.”

MILLIKAN 25, BANNING 21 >> In a game that came down to which line could get the best push, Millikan (2-1) fell to Banning (2-1), 25-21, at Dehaven Stadium.

The Rams relied on the run, and with 5.7 seconds left in the game, quarterback Qeanu Campbell-Caldwell let one fly and it fell short as time expired.

“(We) came out flat and started slow,” Millikan coach Justin Utupo said. “We’ve got to get in the meeting room to watch tape and fix the mistakes and just continue to get better.”

On the opening drive, Campbell-Caldwell was intercepted, but the Rams’ defense came up big after Justin Bailey’s interception stopped a potential score.

Campbell-Caldwell made up for his early turnover as he connected with Zachary Martin on an 80-yard touchdown to put Millikan up, 7-0, with 6:01 left in the first quarter. The teams would exchange touchdowns, and Millikan led 14-13 at halftime.

In the second half, Banning started quickly and and took a 25-14 lead. Millikan answered when Qu’Juan Campbell scored on a 30-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

Millikan will have a bye week before taking on Long Beach Poly on Sept. 22.

PARAMOUNT 56, JORDAN 6 >> A contrast of offensive styles marked visiting Jordan’s quest to snap its winless streak. It was the Panthers’ Wing-T, power running game against Paramount’s versatile spread offense, which mixed the passing of Cedric Hood and Daniel Osby, with the running of Pierre Robinson and the receiving of Ty’rese Gibson.

Jordan had success with its attack but the Panthers’ inability to contain playmakers was the deciding factor in Paramount’s 56-6 homecoming victory. Jordan fell to 0-3; Paramount improved to 2-1.

Paramount’s big plays included Robinson’s 41-yard touchdown run, Willie Cleveland III’s 50-yard run that set up a short Robinson touchdown, and Osby’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Gibson.

Gibson’s twin brother, Ty’Rhae, helped extend Paramount’s lead to 42-6 midway through the fourth quarter when he caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Hood. That was Paramount’s fifth touchdown on a drive of three plays or fewer.

GAHR 48, CERRITOS 0 >> Gahr (2-1) redeemed its loss to Millikan last week with a 48-0 win against Cerritos (0-3).

“The core of our defense has been playing together since they were sophomores,” Gahr coach Greg Marshall said. “We are a defensive team and we like to run the ball on offense as well.”

The Gahr defense forced four turnovers, none bigger than a blocked punt by Lorenzo Sandoval with 30 seconds left in the first half that Miles Johnson returned for a touchdown and 27-0 lead for the Gladiators.

“[That play] got us super hyped up going into halftime and we were just ready to get back out there and keep doing better and better,” Sandoval said.

Gahr running back Micah Bernard rushed for 219 yards on 15 carries and scored twice.

The Gladiators look ahead to a big game against Artesia next week while Cerritos will try to get in the win column when they host Beverly Hills.
