Middleweight champion Geady Golovkin is coming off his toughest fight, a narrow victory over Daniel Jacobs in March at Madison Square Garden. It strengthened Golovkin’s legacy some, but not as much as it could have because Jacobs’ name doesn’t carry worldwide weight. Universally, Canelo Alvarez’s carries a whole lot, so that’s why Golovkin and his team are looking at Saturday’s highly anticipate...

BEVERLY HILLS >> May Pacquiao figures to go down as an all-time great prize-fighter, so it’s always a big deal when there is a news conference for one of his upcoming bouts. It was no different Thursday when Pacquiao and welterweight champion Jessie Vargas got together at the Beverly Hills Hotel to promote their Nov. 5 title fight at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. However, the most intriguing aspect that came out of the proceedings was not what the fighters think of one another. Middleweight champion Geady Golovkin, it seems, will be in the proverbial no-win situation when he defends his championship against Kell Brook on Saturday at O2 Arena in Brook’s native England (on HBO). Golovkin is a beast with 22 consecutive knockouts and Brook is a welterweight champion moving up two weight classes to try and tame him. Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, realizes how easy it would be for experts and fans to perceive this fight in that light. He sees things differently. “Yeah, some people look at it that way, where if he stops Brook early like what happened with Dominic Wade, then people will say it’s a mismatch,” Loeffler said, referring to Golovkin’s seco...

Canelo Alvarez took a lot of heat when, as middleweight champion, he took on welterweight Amir Khan ni May and knocked him out in the sixth round. It’s only fair then that Geady Golovkin absorb similar criticism, or so it would seem. Tom Loeffler disagrees. Loeffler, who promotes Golovkin under the K2 Promotions baer, insists Golovkin defending his title against welterweight champion Kell Brook on Sept. 10 in Brook’s native England (on HBO) is not the same. “I think the fans realize it’s a completely different situation,” Loeffler said. “That’s why tickets sold out as quickly as they did. I mean, literally, 11 minutes.” Golovkin vs. Brook will be contested at O2 Arena in London. It seats 20...

Considering Saul “Canelo” Alvarez took so much heat for defending his middleweight title against a welterweight - Amir Khan - in May, it was surprising to hear Friday moing that middleweight champion Geady Golovkin will now do the same. Golovkin will defend his three belts against Kell Brook, who holds one of the welterweight titles, on Sept. 10 at O2 Arena in Brook’s native England (on HBO). Golvokin is trained by West Covina native Abel Sanchez. He was asked via telephone why Golovkin will be fighting a welterweight. “Well, if you recall, the first welterweight in our time that did that was Ray Leonard and he beat the middleweight (Marvin Hagler), so he (Brook) is willing to do what other...
