George Van Zant, a longtime local sports figure who wrote a column on the outdoors for the Press-Telegram for 26 years, died Saturday. He was 84. VanZant was a Poly High School graduate and a member of the Long Beach City College Hall of Champions. After a successful career as an athlete and coach, Van Zant inherited the P-T’s Outdoors column from his friend Jed Welsh.
