On a cool fall moing of the 2016 JetBlue Long Beach Marathon, Mary Akor, 40, came home victorious in the women’s race with a time of 2:46:49. Three days ago, however, Akor was not an entry as she continued her training for the Philadelphia Marathon next month. Akor, who has won multiple marathons before today, did not plan to run Long Beach until deciding on Friday to enter in the race and use it for training. “I just wanted something that would see where I am and Long Beach was the one that was close to home,” Akor, a Hawthoe native said. SAN PEDRO >> The 8th aual Conquer the Bridge Run Monday moing through the streets of San Pedro, including going back and forth over the Vincent Thomas Bridge, had a youthful feel to it as 13-year old Devin Ito, of Temecula, took home the women’s individual championship for the second straight year in a time of 35 minutes, 41 seconds. Long Beach State junior shortstop Garrett Hampson and sophomore pitcher Darren McCaughan were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division I All-Region first team on Wednesday. Hampson and McCaughan are the first Dirtbags to receive ABCA All-Region recognition and the first Long Beach players honored by the ABCA since Evan Longoria was a third-team ABCA All-American in 2006. Both eaed Big West Conference honors with Hampson being named the 2016 Defensive Player of the Year and McCaughan the Pitcher of the Year.
