Gahr grad Devenski called up to the Astros

Chris Devenski, a 2009 Gahr High graduate, got the news every minor league baseball player waits for Thursday when he was called up to the Houston Astros.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound 25-year-old right-handed pitcher hasn’t made an appearance in the majors yet, but it shouldn’t be long. He’s expected to serve in a long relief role for the Astros, a playoff team out of the American League West a season ago.

He was scheduled to start Thursday’s game for Triple-A Fresno ‑ where he was named MVP of the national championship game in his first start ‑ before he caught a flight to Yankee Stadium instead.

The former Gladiator and Cal State Fullerton Titan finished with a 3.01 eaed run average over 119 2/3 iings at Double-A Corpus Christi last season.

Devenski did get a small taste of the big leagues during spring training when he recorded 4 1/3 scoreless iings against the Padres on March 26 in Mexico City.

He was drafted in the 25th round ‑ 771st overall ‑ by the Chicago White Sox in 2011.
