Area roundup: LBSU softball team slips in series opener at Davis; Dirtbags postponed again

Long Beach State’s softball team was haunted by three errors Saturday afteoon in a 4-1 series-opening loss at UC Davis.

Starting pitchers Christina Clermont and Andrea Reynolds each had shutouts going through four iings, until the Aggies (14-7, 3-1 Big West Conference) got to Clermont in the fifth after two LBSU errors.

The miscues combined with a single from Briaa Waer and a double by Taylor Peters led to three runs in the iing for Davis, which added one more in the sixth with a solo home run by Ashley Lotosynski.

LBSU (22-13, 2-2) plated its only run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Darian Tautalafua.

Clermont struck out eight and allowed two eaed runs, but took her fifth loss of the season.

The teams will meet twice today, with a doubleheader begiing at 10 a.m.

NCAA baseball

For the second day in a row, the Long Beach State Dirtbags had a Big West Conference matchup at Cal State Northridge postponed due to rain.

A doubleheader has been scheduled for today at CSUN, with the first game set to begin at 11 a.m.

A make-up date for Friday’s game has yet to be aounced.

NCAA track and field

Long Beach State’s men’s squad has got quite the streak going after capturing the team championship for the ninth consecutive season Friday at the Big West Challenge at Cal State Fullerton.

Long Beach finished atop the four-team competition with 165.5 points, ahead of UC Santa Barbara (161), UC Irvine (151.5) and the host Titans (133).

LBSU finished first and second in the hammer, as it has in every meet this season. Senior Kody Robison tallied his fifth individual victory with a toss of 202 feet, 8 inches and junior Robert Marlow also reached the 200-foot mark in his fourth consecutive outing (202-04).

The 49ers went 1-2-3 in the long jump with senior Willie Alexander leading the way (24-09 1/4), followed by freshman Kemonie Briggs (lifetime-best 24-00 1/2) and sophomore Herman Day (22-00 1/4).

Alexander also won the triple jump with a season-best 47-03 1/4.

Senior Michael Montgomery won the pole vault (16-06 3/4) and junior Xander Cooper took second (season-best 16-03).

Day took first in the high jump (personal-best 6-06 3/4), followed by junior Diego Felix (6-02 3/4), while junior Daniel York-Mouton won the 400 meters (47.05) and the team of Alexander, Briggs, freshman John Kendrick and senior Michael Perez-Rogers won the 4x100 relay in a season-best 40.98 seconds.

On the women’s side, Long Beach placed second after wiing the event the last two years, coming in nine points behind UC Santa Barbara.

Junior Riley Cooks won the 200 (24.01) and the 100 hurdles (13.93) and Cooks, Courtne’ Davis, sophomore Ashleigh Chambers and freshman Whitney Knox ran the sixth-fastest 4x100 relay in school history (45.84) to win the event.

Long Beach took the top three spots in the shot put with senior Fatima Vergara 44-08 1/4), senior Briaa Viltz (41-10 1/2) and freshman Nikaela Harris (41-09 1/4). Senior Aundrea Yancy won the triple jump with a season-best 37-06 1/2 on just one attempt.

Long Beach State retus to action next week when it hosts the Pacific Coast Invitational on Thursday and the aual Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The two meets will be held at the newly renovated Jack Rose Track, marking the first time in 11 years LBSU will host a meet on campus.

Prep softball

WILSON >> The Bruins split a nonleague doubleheader at home against Santa Monica with a 4-3 victory followed by an 8-6 setback.

In game one, Wilson had a 3-1 lead heading into the seventh iing before Santa Monica tied it up with two runs in the top of the iing.

In the bottom, Kylie Yanez delivered a game-wiing ground-rule double that scored McKenzie Barbara, who had singled and advanced on a passed ball.

Joette Vega eaed the win in the circle after pitching a complete game with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, Wilson came up just short despite a strong performance from Arisa Cleaveland (3 for 4, RBI, run).

Major League Baseball

After being called up to the Houston Astros on Thursday, 2009 Gahr High graduate Chris Devenski saw his first official big league action Friday night at Milwaukee.

After starter Scott Feldman lasted just four iings and allowed four runs, the former Gladiator and Cal State Fullerton Titan pitched three shutout iings, allowing just one hit while striking out four and walking none.

The Astros eventually lost to the Brewers, 6-4.
