Arrest warrant issued for Rams' Tre Mason after he misses court date

A Florida court has issued an arrest warrant for Los Angeles Rams ruing back Tre Mason, who failed to show up for a Monday arraignment relating to his misdemeanor charges from early March.

Mason had been arrested in Hollywood, Fla., on March 5 on charges that included reckless driving, possession of marijuana, and resisting arrest. According to Broward County court records, the 22-year-old will be held on $1,500 bond once he is taken into custody.

Mason was subdued with a Taser during his initial arrest, according to a police report. after which he was taken to a hospital for medical clearance. The arresting officer wrote he had seen Mason driving his Porsche at more than 75 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone.

After being pulled over, Mason repeatedly declined to identify himself. According to the report, Mason refused to exit his vehicle even after two more officers arrived on the scene. After being tased twice, Mason put his hands behind his back. One of the officers then found a total of 12 grams of marijuana located throughout the car.

The incident comes during what was supposed to be a crucial offseason for the former Aubu star, who had rushed for 972 yards and five touchdowns through his first two seasons with the Rams. A former third-round pick in 2014, Mason was deactivated for the Rams’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 22 because he had missed the team bus.

Already relegated to a reserve role behind star rookie Todd Gurley, the 5-foot-8, 207-pound Mason was also competing for backfield touches with Bey Cuingham. Cuingham, who had 140 rushing yards and 714 kick retu yards last season, recently signed his restricted free-agent tender.

In March, head coach Jeff Fisher had told reporters he expected Mason to be with the Rams for the start of their offseason program in Oxnard next Monday — a prospect that seems increasingly dubious given his legal issues.

“I know he’s extremely embarrassed as to the incident, but we don’t have the facts yet,” Fisher said. “We’re still waiting on that. To me, it was a little uncharacteristic of him and if in fact what was reported is true then I’ll be really disappointed.”
