Area roundup: Poly sweeps Millikan at home, gains control of Moore League boys volleyball standings

Long Beach Poly’s boys volleyball team cooled off a red hot Millikan squad in three sets Thursday afteoon and now controls its own destiny for a shot at a Moore League title.

The Rams, which came into the match having won four consecutive Moore League contests, were not able to slow down Poly’s fast starts in each of the three sets and the Jackrabbits capitalized on Millikan’s errors and cruised to the 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 sweep at home.

“We’ve been working a lot on simplicity in the past couple of weeks,” Poly coach Justin Oleole said. “We’re finding out that chemistry is more important than skill and the simple tactics like that showed tonight.”

Poly looks to continue its quest for a league championship Tuesday at Wilson, while Millikan will be at home against Jordan.

Two months after being put on administrative leave following an ejection from a Moore League contest, Long Beach Poly girls’ soccer head coach Teri Collins was told earlier this week that she will not be retuing to coach the Jackrabbits next season after 17 years on the job.

According to Collins, the ejection and two parent complaints this year doomed her future as a coach at Poly where she’s won three consecutive Moore League titles and of five the last eight league crowns.

“Three instances in 17 years took me down,” Collins said. “But that doesn’t take away what we’ve accomplished. I’ve been extremely fortunate to coach some amazing kids at Poly.”

Poly administration and the Long Beach Unified School District collectively made the decision not to keep Collins on as head coach.

Both refused to comment on this story. Collins will retain her teaching job on campus.

ST. ANTHONY 18, ST. PIUS X-MATTHIAS 0 >> The Saints (9-5) improved to 2-0 within the Santa Fe League after notching 16 hits.

Angelica Ponce pitched a four-hit shutout and went 4 for 5 at the plate, while Amanda McCalip finished with five RBIs and scored five runs.

Ari Santana also knocked in five runs for St. Anthony, which retus to the field Tuesday against St. Mary’s at Pan Am Park.

WARREN 11, DOWNEY 0 >> Nina Garcia and Jocelyn Heandez combined for four-hit shutout in the circle for the Bears, while Lesley Bojorquez went 4 for 4 with two runs scored and Brooklyn Sepulveda finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs, a double and a two-run home run.

POLY 11, MILLIKAN 7 >> The Jackrabbits improved to 9-0 in Moore League play behind three wins apiece from the doubles teams of Stephan Kaminsky/Darren Hall and Jacob Williams/Stanly Chung.

Day Nguyen led the Rams, finishing 3-0 in singles.

Boys golf

Wilson High captured the Knabe Cup team championship for the sixth time in the touament’s 19-year history Wednesday afteoon with a 1-over-par total score of 289 at Lakewood Country Club.

The Bruins finished ahead of the 36-team field behind a 2-under 70 from Hunter Epson, good for second place, and an even 72 from Andrew Feandes.

The finish was five strokes ahead of second-place Palos Verdes, while La Mirada (303) came in fourth. Poly (312) was seventh and Millikan (316) tied for ninth.

Chris Trivell of Palos Verdes took home individual medalist honors with a 69.
