LA Rams re-sign kicker Greg Zuerlein

A day after aouncing a blockbuster trade for the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, the Los Angeles Rams made a much quieter move: re-signing free-agent kicker Greg Zuerlein.

The Rams inked Zuerlein to a one-year deal, bringing back a former sixth-round draft pick who tied the NFL record with two 60-yard field goals in his career. While those exploits helped him ea such nicknames as “Greg the Leg” and “Legatron,” Zuerlein’s retu doesn’t mean the starting job is his to lose.

The 28-year-old converted only 20 of 30 field-goal attempts last season, the last of which was a blocked 48-yarder in overtime of a 19-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Zuerlein ranked third-to-last in field-goal conversion among NFL kickers, ahead of only Josh Scobee and Kyle Brindza, who were respectively released by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in early October.

Zuerlein also missed two extra-point attempts last season, but is currently the only kicker on the Rams’ roster. The team, which starts its offseason program in Oxnard on Monday, is expected to bring in competition at the position.

According to NFL Network, the Zuerlein’s deal guarantees him $675,000, and could be worth up to $3.3 million.
