Area roundup: Bellflower, Gahr baseball teams remain perfect in league play

Bellflower High’s baseball team had no trouble Friday afteoon in a 22-0 Suburban League win over Artesia.

The Bucs (13-4, 6-0) totaled 20 hits and were led by big offensive performances from Jorge Rodriguez (single, triple, home run, seven RBIs, three runs), Aaron Orozco (double, home run, five RBIs, two runs) and Tyler Wright (three hits, triple, four runs).

GAHR 11, LYNWOOD 1 >> The Gladiators (13-4, 2-0 San Gabriel Valley League) cruised at home behind two hits and four RBIs from senior catcher Vic Salazar.

Girls swimming

POLY 122, JORDAN 34 >> Isabella Magalong and Fioa Quach anchored the Jackrabbits, each wiing two events en route to the Moore League victory.

Magalong won the 50-yard freestyle (26.23 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:03.60), while Quach took first in the 100 freestyle (54.75) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.66).

Poly will face Millikan in a key league matchup Thursday.

Boys volleyball

BELLFLOWER 3, NORWALK 0 >> The Bucs (11-7, 8-0) kept on rolling through their Suburban League schedule with a 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 sweep at home.

Edgar Sanchez led the way with 14 kills and Marlon Valencia added 11 for Bellflower, which retus to the court Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. match at Artesia (1-10, 1-6).

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, WHITTIER CHRISTIAN 0 >> Fredrick Spencer paced the Crusaders (17-2, 4-0) to a 25-12, 25-14, 25-14 Olympic League sweep on the road Thursday afteoon with 12 kills.

Boys golf

POLY 392, MILLIKAN 395 >> The Jackrabbits (11-4, 5-1) pulled out a close Moore League victory at Recreation Park Golf Course behind a 1-under 71 from Jericho Betts.

MJ DelaCruz was the low finisher for the Rams (10-6, 4-3) at 76.

NCAA track and field

Long Beach State hosted its first meet at Jack Rose Track in 11 years Thursday with the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.

Sophomore Madison Caey picked up a first-place finish for Long Beach with a 24.22-second performance in the 200 meters and was also part of LBSU’s 4x100 relay team that finished second (45.89).

She teamed with sophomore Ashleigh Chambers, freshman Courtne’ Davis and redshirt freshman Whitney Knox, establishing the eighth-fastest time in program history.

On the men’s side, seniors Coer Rouse and Michael Montgomery tied for third in the pole vault, each clearing a season-best 17 feet, 6 inches. On the track, senior Ryan Colebrook was the top collegiate finisher, placing third overall in the 110 hurdles (14.84).

On Friday, senior Kody Robison was the top collegiate finisher (fourth overall) in the men’s hammer with a distance of 211-10 during day one of the 22nd Aual Beach Invitational.

Sophomore Ashley Carrera established a personal-record 37:25.47 to finish fifth in the women’s 10,000.

Long Beach State retus to Jack Rose Track for the conclusion of the Invitational today.

NCAA women’s golf

Long Beach State senior and All-American candidate Kassidy Teare has been named the Big West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for April, marking her third time receiving the award after eaing the nod twice last season.

She was awarded for her performance at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, where she finished fifth out of 92 competitors with a 54-hole score of an even-par 216.

LBSU retus to action Sunday in the three-day, 54-hole Big West Conference Championship at the Kapalua Bay Course in Maui.
