Cabrillo boys soccer clinches Moore League title with a bang

LONG BEACH >> Cabrillo’s coronation as Moore League boys soccer champions on Wednesday was equal parts beautiful and emphatic. The Jaguars scored three quality goals in the first half against visiting Long Beach Poly and cruised to a 4-0 win in their regular-season finale.

Currently ranked No. 2 in CIF Southe Section Division 2, Cabrillo (19-4-5, 9-2-1) clinched just its second Moore League championship in school history and the first-ever outright title. The Jaguars shared the league crown in 2004 with Poly.

“This was the perfect way to finish league,” Cabrillo head coach Pay Noyes said. “We got ahead early with great goals and I got the second string in for almost a half-hour.”

Cabrillo dominated the proceedings as it outshot Poly 8-1 in the opening 40 minutes and 16-10 for the game. In the 15th minute, Jaguar midfielder Coby Castillo sent a ball over the top for fellow senior captain Angel Gomez to chip in off the half-volley from the top of the 18-yard box.

In the 27th minute, Cabrillo senior Victor Morales chased his own cross into the box and blasted home the second goal. Eight minutes later, Luis Galdemez picked out fellow junior Mylz Wilson cutting across the top of the box for a phenomenal third goal. All three goals included five different Jaguars, and all were scored with one-touch finishes.

“We want to get everyone involved in the game,” Cabrillo senior midfielder Edgar Gonzalez said. “So that when you do get the ball, you know what to do with it. And we don’t care who scores, as long as it ends up in the back of the net.”

Cabrillo netted the fourth and final goal just after the hour mark when reserve striker Addix Serra scored on a counter-attack. By that time, Noyes’ mind had already moved onto the next step for this team.

“I was already thinking (about the playoffs) after the third goal,” said Noyes, who has been the only varsity boys soccer coach at Cabrillo since arriving in 1999.

“I have a competitive illness, I guess,” Noyes added. “I really hope the Moore League does well again (in the playoffs) because it’s been a really fun season and I respect the other Long Beach teams.”

Cabrillo, Millikan and Jordan all reached the quarterfinal round last year. The Panthers were the only Moore League team to reach the semifinal round. The 2016 CIF-SS soccer playoff brackets will be released Monday.

JORDAN 5, COMPTON 0 >> A hat trick from freshman Octavio Salazar helped the Panthers (14-11-0, 8-4-0) clinch third place in the Moore League. Millikan (18-5-5, 8-3-1) finished second to end its eight-year reign as league champs.
