Long Beach State Roundup: Dirtbags fail to sweep again

For the second straight weekend and the fifth time this season, the Long Beach State Dirtbags missed a chance to sweep a weekend series and fell to UC Irvine 7-2 in Big West Conference action on Sunday at Blair Field.

LBSU (21-13, 5-4 Big West) only had two hits, which is a season low. Daniel Jackson put the Dirtbags in front with a solo home run in the second iing, giving them more home runs (19) in 34 games than they had all of last year (18). UCI starter Alonzo Garcia pitched eight iings with four walks and three strikeouts. LBSU senior Taer Brown took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 iings.

Softball

Cal Poly 1, Long Beach State 0 >> Cal Poly completed a weekend BWC sweep at the LBSU Softball Complex. LBSU (24-16, 4-5) got another strong complete-game performance from junior Christina Clermont, who allowed just five hits. Two errors behind her proved to be costly while Cal Poly ace Lindsey Chalmers went the distance and allowed six base ruers. LBSU had a total of 13 hits and one run in its first three games at home this season.

Women’s golf

LBSU freshman Haley Tygret shot 1-over-par 73 to help the 49ers into a three-way tie for second place at the Big West Conference Championships at Kapalua Bay in Maui. LBSU has a one-round team score of 20-over 308, tied with No. 2 UC Davis and No. 4 UC Riverside.

Track & field

Almost 1,400 fans came to the newly renovated Jack Rose Track on campus for the 22nd aual Beach Invitational, where 12 meet records and five stadium records were broken over the course of the two-day event. British superstar Greg Rutherford, the men’s long jump 2012 Olympic champion, highlighted the event by wiing with a record jump of 27 feet, 2 3/4 inches.
