Jed Weaver, Mike Trout power Angels to 3-2 win

CHICAGO – Jered Weaver is making his point.

A couple weeks after Weaver guaranteed not only that he will again pitch effectively, but will regain some velocity, he showed both in the Angels’ 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday afteoon.

Weaver kept the White Sox off balance all afteoon, getting them to hit a collection of weak popups and fly balls. He gave up one run in seven iings.

He also hit 86 mph once and 85 mph a couple other times. He was consistently at 83-84 mph, which is progress from spring training, when he was throwing 79-81.

Although the velocity certainly helps Weaver, he has been effective without it when his command and control are good.

The Angels managed only two runs in six iings against White Sox lefty John Danks, but they actually hit the ball hard against him consistently.

Kole Calhoun lined out to strand two ruers in the first. Craig Gentry hit a smash that third baseman Todd Frazier snagged, to start a double play, in the second. Andrelton Simmons also had Frazier rob him on a hard-hit ball in the third. In the fourth, C.J. Cron blasted a drive that was caught at the waing track.

Finally, in the fifth, Trout hit one that no one could catch, a drive into the bleachers in left-center. The two-run homer was his second of the year.

Trout also had a single and he walked twice, on the heels of a three-hit game Wednesday.
