Dirtbags struggling in Riverside

The No. 18-ranked Long Beach State Dirtbags had a tough start to their weekend at UC Riverside, falling in a final-iing loss Friday in Big West Conference play and trailing the Highlanders at press time Saturday.

Friday night’s series opener saw LBSU fall 4-3 on a game-ending single from Vince Feandez. The Dirtbags led 2-0 in the top of the sixth after David Banuelos’ third home run of the year, with Chris Mathewson in control on the mound.

The Highlanders took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of that iing, however, including a run scored by Lakewood alum Austin Colvin. The Dirtbags tied the game in the eighth iing, but lost in the ninth.

In a high-scoring affair Saturday, the Dirtbags trailed 9-6 after six iings. Visit PressTelegram.com/sports for the result of the game.

Long Beach State 2-14, UC Santa Barbara 3-6 >> The 49ers split a pair of games on the road against UC Santa Barbara, losing the first before bouncing back in the second game of Saturday’s Big West doubleheader.

Long Beach State (25-17, 5-6) got big days from Haley Tobler (six RBIs) and Alley Perkins (four hits).

Tobler had the highlight of the day in the seventh iing of game two, with a grand slam. The final game of the series begins today at 1 p.m.

In late Friday night action, the 49ers went 2-1 at the Outrigger Resorts Aloha Invitational in Hawaii, defeating Washington and Louisana-Monroe but falling to host Hawaii. The 49ers’ top flight team of Nele Barber and Rachel Nieto went 3-0.

Prep softball

WARREN 5, ALISO NIGUEL 2 >> The Bears went 2-0 in the La Mirada Touament, defeating Aliso Niguel thanks to a complete-game effort from pitcher Jocelyn Heandez, who allowed two uneaed runs. Shortstop Lesley Bojorquez had two hits and two runs. Also in the touament, the Bears defeated Montebello 15-1 in a game shortened by the mercy rule. Sol Gaona pitched all four iings and struck out five, allowing just one hit. Bojorquez had six RBIs, including a game-ending grand slam.
