UCLA's Myles Jack finally hears his name called

Reports of a serious problem with Myles Jack’s surgically repaired right knee dropped the former UCLA linebacker out of the NFL Draft’s first round completely on Thursday, but he finally heard his name called Friday as the 36th overall pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jacksonville traded its No. 38 and 146 picks to the Baltimore Ravens to grab Jack.

Jack was once considered a lock as a Top 5 pick due to his superior athletic ability, but a to meniscus in September and recent reports that the cartilage was begiing to separate from the bone ultimately ruined his draft stock.

He attended the first round of the draft, sitting in the green room with family and friends in Chicago’s Auditorium Theater for three hours without hearing his name called, but did not retu to the event for the second round. He watched the draft from a hotel room in Chicago instead.

After his first-round snub, Jack hit the gym Friday moing and posted a video on Twitter of him throwing down a two-handed dunk accompanied by a single sleep emoji.

Jack told the New York Post on Wednesday, the day before the draft, he was at risk for degenerative knee injury and could potentially face microfracture surgery, however, Dr. James Andrews, who examined the linebacker in December, told Jack on Friday he wouldn’t need the procedure, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Microfracture surgery aims to repair cartilage issues by drilling tiny holes into the bone, resulting in bleeding. The blood then leads to a new layer of cartilage, but the new layer is not as strong as the original.

Many professional athletes have had the procedure, including Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney and former New Orleans Saints Marques Colston and Reggie Bush.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound 20-year-old injured his meniscus during practice and left school having only played three games in his junior season. While at UCLA, the linebacker was a two-time second-team All-Pac-12 selection. During his freshman year, his versatility eaed him both the Pac-12 Offensive and Defensive Freshman on the Year awards as he also played some ruing back for the Bruins.

Two linebackers were drafted in the first round before Jack. Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith, who is coming off of major knee surgery, is not expected to play in 2016 but was still drafted ahead of Jack. Smith went to the Dallas Cowboys with the 34th overall pick.
