Area roundup: St. Joseph captures first outright girls soccer league title

St. Joseph clinched its first-ever outright Del Rey League girls soccer championship Thursday afteoon with a 3-0 road win over La Salle.

Jessica Johnson scored twice for the Jesters, while Nicole Bakar added the third goal.

St. Joseph will lea its opening-round opponent when the CIF Southe Section playoff pairings are released Monday at 10 a.m.

LAKEWOOD 5, CABRILLO 1 >> Amanda Febach scored two goals and Haah Arcala, Cassandra Fraga and Haah Sturtevant added one each as the Lancers celebrated senior day with a comfortable victory to close out the regular season.

Boys soccer

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 2, WHITTIER CHRISTIAN 1 >> The Crusaders erased a 1-0 halftime deficit behind goals from Roger Ramos and Brent Van Meeteren to clinch their fourth consecutive Olympic League championship. Playoff-bound V.C. finished with a 7-1 league mark.

ST. JOHN BOSCO 6, MATER DEI 1 >> Mamoru Kamisasanuki scored twice as the Braves (16-3-6) ended the regular season as the second-place team in the Trinity League.

Next up will be the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. SJB was ranked No. 5 in the latest D1 poll.

Boys basketball

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 51, WHITTIER CHRISTIAN 45 >> Ronald Massey led the way with 19 points and Robert Downs added 10 points to help the Crusaders win their regular season finale.

Their only hope for the postseason will be an at-large bid when the CIF-SS Div. 4A playoff brackets are released on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

JC softball

SANTA ANA 6, LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE 3 >> Despite totaling just one hit, LBCC found itself tied 3-3 Wednesday afteoon before the visiting Dons scored three runs in the top of the seventh iing.

Brooke Loard (Millikan HS) took the loss in the circle for the Vikings as both teams moved to 4-4. The sophomore allowed six runs and six hits over 6 1/3 iings while striking out seven batters and walking six.

Long Beach retus to the field for a 2 p.m. contest at Cypress today.
