Area roundup: LBSU women's teis team upset in Big West semifinals; Darian Tautalafua sets conference RBI mark

Long Beach State’s women’s teis team had its 11-match win streak snapped at quite an inopportune time Friday afteoon. A 4-3 semifinal setback against Hawai’i at the Indian Wells Teis Garden could end its season and will keep the squad out of the Big West Conference Touament championship round for the first time since 2000.

The 49ers (18-5) got out to a 1-0 advantage with wins from the tandems of Laura Eales-Hayley Thompson and Ebba Unden-Alex Jones at No. 1 and 3 doubles, respectively.

All six doubles matchups were finished in straight sets, leading to the match eventually being tied at 3. Hawai’i’s Cindy Nguyen, a Millikan High graduate, bested Maeva Razakasoa 6-3, 6-3.

Razakasoa had won 11 consecutive singles matches prior.

The touament championship will feature fourth-seeded Hawai’i against No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara.

NCAA softball

LONG BEACH STATE 8, CAL STATE FULLERTON 4 >> LT Torres delivered five RBIs and Darian Tautalafua added two on a triple as the 49ers (28-18, 8-7 Big West Conference) took the rubber match at No. 25 Fullerton.

With the two RBIs, Tautalafua became the all-time Big West Conference leader with 171.

The Titans (39-12, 13-2) took early lead on a two-run home run from Alexis Gonzales, but Long Beach had its offense going from there.

Christina Clermont improved to 18-8, going the distance once again while striking out three.

Long Beach State will host UC Riverside next weekend, begiing with a doubleheader Saturday.

Baseball

BELLFLOWER 5, CERRITOS 3 >> The Bucs scored five runs in the first iing and that was more than enough in the Suburban League win.

Junior shortstop Aaron Orozco had two hits and an RBI, while junior Eric Romo threw his second complete game of the season and picked up his fourth win behind four strikeouts.

Boys volleyball

BELLFLOWER 3, ST. MARGARET’S 2 >> Edgar Sanchez had 19 kills and Arick Mom added 12 to lead the Bucs (15-7) to a 21-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-21, 15-7 nonleague win Thursday on the road.

Bellflower retus to Suburban League play Tuesday with a 3 p.m. tilt at La Mirada and will look to finish with a perfect 12-0 league mark.

GAHR 3, DOWNEY 2 >> After falling behind 2-1, the Gladiators responded in time for a 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-8 San Gabriel Valley League win on the road behind Zachary Ayala (20 kills, four blocks), Jared Veola (22 kills) and Niko Lopez (57 assists).
