Area roundup: St. Anthony's Ponce tosses no-hitter; LBCC advances in softball playoffs

St. Anthony High School senior Angelica Ponce pitched a perfect game, striking out eight of the 15 batters she faced as the Saints softball team improved to 7-0 in Santa Fe League play Tuesday afteoon with a 15-0 win over St. Pius X-Matthias.

Ponce helped her own cause with a home run. Amanda McCalip went 2 for 3 with three runs scored and four steals and Fiona Mutu went 3 for 4 with four RBIs.

St Anthony (14-5, 7-0), which has outscored its league opponents 103-1 while averaging 14.7 runs per game, will be at St. Mary’s Academy on Thursday afteoon.

WARREN 6, DOWNEY 0 >> Jocelyn Heandez pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out three and giving up five hits and Ashley Machado (3 for 3, two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored) paced the Bears.

MILLIKAN 7, WILSON 3 >> Four players had RBIs as the Rams used a balanced offensive effort en route to a Moore League victory.

Baseball

GAHR 6, DOWNEY 1 >> The Gladiators (20-5) improved to 7-0 in San Gabriel Valley League, handing the Vikings their first league loss. Chris Corral picked up his eighth win of the season and Jesus Salazar had three hits and scored twice.

BELLFLOWER 3, WHITTIER CHRISTIAN 1 >> Senior Jorge Rodriguez pitched the final three iings and struck out six in a nonleague victory. He had two hits, including a triple and an RBI.

Badminton

CERRITOS 11, POLY 10 >> The Dons (12-2) edged the Jackrabbits (13-2) in the second round of the CIF Southe Section playoffs at home. Jackie Kan was 2-0 in girls singles play. The team of Janice Hui and Esther Kim finished 2-0 in doubles and Kan and Leo Ruan went 2-0 in mixed doubles. Ruan was 2-0 in boys singles and the tandem of Ben Lou and Thomas Nguyen went 2-0 in doubles for Cerritos. Eric Shu and Sydney Feandez won their only match for Poly in mixed doubles.

Boys golf

Poly’s Jericho Betts leads the Moore League individual touament after two days of action with a 6-under-par 138. He shot a 3-under 69 at El Dorado Park Golf Course during Round 2 to take a three-stroke advantage over Wilson’s Andre Calubid, who shot a 73. The Bruins occupy positions 2 through 7 with the third round set for today at 1 p.m. at Recreation Park Golf Course.

Boys volleyball

WILSON 3, COMPTON 0 >> The Bruins rolled to their fifth consecutive victory, a 25-6, 25-11, 25-12 Moore League sweep behind 14 kills from Dylan Herrera. Wilson (7-5 in league) will finish third in league and will lea its CIF-SS first-round playoff opponent when pairings are released Friday.

CABRILLO 3, JORDAN 1 >> The Jaguars cruised to a four-set Moore League win at home. Both teams finished with 5-7 league records, tying for fifth place.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 3, WHITTIER CHRISTIAN 0 >> The Crusaders (22-2, 8-0) closed out the regular season with a 25-11, 25-12, 25--9 Olympic League sweep on the road. Spencer Fredrick led the way with 13 kills and Jon Fey delivered 24 assists.

Junior college softball

LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE 8, BAKERSFIELD 5 >> The No. 16 seed Vikings (23-18) picked up a win at home in a play-in game for the SoCal Regional Playoffs behind sophomore Mariah Jacobo, who went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and sophomore Brooke Loard (Millikan HS), who pitched a complete game and struck out 11. Long Beach broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth iing. Bakersfield loaded the bases in the top of the seventh. Loard got Cassandra Sanchez to line out to end the threat and help LBCC advance to a best-of-three first-round regional series at No. 1 Cypress. Game 1 is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.

NCAA men’s golf

Long Beach State senior Daniel Chian shot a 69 at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley to climb into a tie for first place individually and bring the 49ers into fourth as a team during Round 2 of the Big West Conference Championship. Long Beach improved by eight strokes from Monday’s performance, helping it move up three spots heading into today’s final round. The 49ers (6-over-par) trail UC Riverside (2-under), Cal Poly (4-over) and UC Santa Barbara (5-over). The final round begins at 7:30 a.m. and live play can be followed on Golfstat.com.
