Area roundup: Chian to represent LBSU in NCAA Golf Tournament; St. Anthony softball team rolls to league title

It was aounced Thursday that Long Beach State senior Daniel Chian has received an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Touament.

He is the No. 4 seed out five competitors who will be in the Arizona Regional, May 16-18, at the Gallery Golf Club in Marana.

Chian is one of 45 individuals to be selected to play at six regional sites. He led the 49ers at eight events this season and leads the Big West Conference with a 71.2 stroke average.

He won individual medalist honors at the Folino Invitational and the Anteater Invitational and finished ruer-up at the OGIO UCSB Invitational and is one of two from the Big West to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Touament. Sam Gillis, of UC Santa Barbara, will also compete.

Big West Champion UC Riverside will compete as a team.

Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 27-June 1 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.

ST. ANTHONY 27, ST. MARY’S ACADEMY 0 >> The Saints (15-5) cruised on the road, improving to 8-0 in Santa Fe League play and wrapping up their second consecutive league title behind 10 RBIs from Amanda McCalip and yet another stellar performance in the circle from Angelica Ponce (complete game, eight strikeouts, one walk- four hits, three RBIs).

Ari Santana (grand slam) and Fiona Mutu (3 for 3, two RBIs, three runs scored) also had big days as the Saints racked up 25 hits.

With two games remaining on the league schedule, S.A. has outscored its opponents 130-1 while averaging 16.25 runs through eight contests.

LAKEWOOD 9, POLY 0 >> Vanessa Foreman struck out 13 and freshman Taylor Pack finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs to help the Lancers improve to 22-4 overall and 11-0 in Moore League play.

CJ Apacible also notched two RBIs for Lakewood, which will close out the regular season Tuesday when it hosts Millikan (12-15, 9-2) at 7 p.m.

MILLIKAN 23, JORDAN 2 >> Georgia Hilleshiem got the win and Cheeks Ramos went 4 for 5 with eight RBIs and two home runs.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 4, VILLAGE CHRISTIAN 1 >> Aa Collier picked up a complete-game win and Katie Morewood delivered two RBIs for the Crusaders, which will conclude Olympic League play Tuesday at Maranatha.

Badminton

WESTMINSTER 11, JORDAN 10 >> The Panthers came up just short in the CIF Southe Section Division 2 semifinals, only falling by one despite forfeiting two matches due to a shortage of singles players.

Blessing Omolafe went 2-0 for Jordan in girls singles and the tandems of Aa Diep/Kassidy Ke and Rosemarie Huynh/Alondra Orozco were undefeated in doubles.

Golf

The sixth aual Long Beach Poly Golf Classic is set for June 17th at Recreation Park Golf Course.

The fundraiser, which helps support Poly’s golf programs, will include action on the course, dier, a raffle and a silent auction.

A shotgun start is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.

Last year, the event raised more than $14,000 and this year’s donations will continue to be used to help the teams offset the costs of travel and equipment.
