Area roundup: Nguyen sweeps Moore League teis finals; LBCC falters in baseball playoff opener

Millikan High senior Day Nguyen flashed back to 2014 and accomplished exactly what he set out to do Friday evening, capturing the Moore League boys teis title in both singles and doubles with back-to-back victories at the Billie Jean King Center in Long Beach.

Nguyen defeated Poly’s Adam Nagouey, 6-0, 6-0, in a match that was far more competitive than the final score might indicate, before teaming with Eric Taylor to beat Nagouey and Felippe Dacudao, 6-3, 6-3.

He accomplished the same feat two seasons ago, locking down both crowns, before finishing as ruer-up in both formats as a junior.

“I just feel thankful for the opportunity,” the UCLA commit said. “Not many people get to play teis like I do and I’m just grateful.”

Millikan had a battle on their hands during the doubles final as Poly got out to a quick start in both frames, but Nguyen’s experience, along with some timely power shots by Taylor, helped the Rams finish it off in straight sets.

“It’s nice to get it back,” Millikan coach Torie Frapwell said of the titles. “We were hoping to get a little bit further in league this year, so coming out at number two in the end with that, it was nice to finish number one in individuals.”

“He’s had a really good season overall,” she added of Nguyen. “Nothing ever to be disappointed with, it’s kind of bittersweet to hit the end now.”

Pairings for the CIF Southe Section playoffs are set to be released Monday at 11 a.m.

BAKERSFIELD 5, LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE 2 >> The eighth-seeded Vikings (24-13) came up short in their SoCal Regional Playoff opener at home, never able to recover after allowing three runs to the No. 9 seed Renegades (27-10) in the first iing.

By the end of the second, LBCC trailed 5-0 and could only muster four hits on the afteoon.

In the bottom of the ninth, Long Beach had ruers on first and third with nobody out. Freshman Tristan Chamberlain (Millikan HS) scored on a wild pitch, but that would be all.

Bakersfield pitcher Hudson Hartley pitched a complete game, not allowing a run until the eighth on a home run by Jackson Foss (Wilson HS), while Daniel Rocha took the loss.

Game 2 is set for Saturday at 11 a.m., and a Viking victory would force a decisive third game at 3 p.m. Long Beach has been swept out of the first round of the playoffs each of the last two seasons.
