Area roundup: Mayfair High shines at Suburban League finals

NORWALK >> Less than a week after capturing the first CIF Southe Section Dual Meet championship in program history, Mayfair’s wrestling team tued in another big day as it dominated the Suburban League individual finals Friday night at John Gle High.

The Monsoons took home titles in nine of the 14 weight classes, as Jose Alvarez (106 pounds), Eie Aguilera (113), Fabian Reyes (126), Jake Alcobendas (145), Justin Pichedwatana (160), Christopher Martin (170), Brian Pigao (182), Andrew Ramos (195) and Joseph Tan (285) all delivered victories. Alcobendas, Pichedwatana, Pigao and Tan all won by pin.

The host Eagles totaled three championships as Gio Martinez (120), Michael Estrada (152, pin) and Josiah Delgado came up victorious, and La Mirada got wins from Carlos Reyes (132) and Manuel Romero (138). The battle between Romero and Mayfair’s Khalil Howard at 138 tued out to be one of he most back-and-forth affairs of the event, with Romero scoring to pull out the 6-5 win just before the whistle.

With the Monsoons looking for as many victories as they can get as one of the better seasons in program history rolls on, head coach Ibee Atalla was very happy with Friday’s results, but says the team is still hungry for much more.

“We wanted the league, but our eyes are going to state right now,” he said. “We know it’s a qualifying touament when it comes to individuals. We won the duals as a team, that was one of our major goals. Going into CIF right now is the main idea, that’s what this touament’s about.”

Long Beach State men’s volleyball

The No. 1 ranked 49ers made quick work of USC on Friday night with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-25 sweep on the road. Outside hitter TJ DeFalco had a match-high 15 kills while fellow freshman Kyle Ensing had nine kills on just 18 attacks to go with 10 digs.

Long Beach State softball

The 49ers split two games on the opening day of the 2016 season at the Sportco Kickoff Classic. Long Beach Statet beat South Dakota by run rule, 12-4, before falling to Syracuse in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel.

Against South Dakota, junior Lauren Lombardi cracked a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3 and then Long Beach State broke the game open in the third when a two-run double by Haley Tobler made the score 8-3.

A fourth-iing bases-loaded double to center field by Haah Cookson finished the game as junior Christina Clermont collected her first win of the season, striking out seven batters and allowing just two hits after the first iing.

Long Beach State freshman Cielo Meza took the ball to the circle against Syracuse and had a fantastic debut, striking out 13 batters in her first collegiate start. However, the Orange was able to squeeze out the game’s only run in the third iing to take a 1-0 victory.

The 49ers picked up six hits against Syracuse’s AaMarie Gatti, but were unable to break through in the loss.

Long Beach State is back in action with two more games Saturday against Texas Tech at 9 a.m. and No. 14 Miesota at 1:30 p.m.

Boys basketball

ARTESIA 73, GLENN 28 >> The Pioneers (10-16, 3-9) jumped out to a 28-2 lead on Thursday and never looked back. Freshman Heder Gladden led Artesia with 23 points. Isaiah Harris added 12 points.

Girls water polo

WILSON 19, CABRILLO 0 >> Freshman Brooke Gruneisen scored seven goal for the Bruins in this Moore League regular-season finale on Thursday.

Long Beach State men’s nasketball

The 49ers (13-12, 7-3 Big West) are on their final regular season trip out of greater Los Angeles and face UC Davis at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Long Beach State is the top scoring team in the conference at 76 points per game. The Aggies (10-13, 5-5) are the best Big West team in scoring defense at 62.8 points per game allowed, and they rank in the nation’s top 50 in scoring defense.
