Trayce Thompson walk-off home run lifts Dodgers over .500

The numbers looked bleak.

Over 17-plus iings in two games against the New York Mets, the Dodgers’ bats had stranded 14 ruers and scored only four runs.

Trayce Thompson altered the storyline with one swing.

Thompson, pinch hitting with two outs in the bottom of the ninth iing, hit a walk-off home run on a drive to left-center field, lifting the Dodgers to a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium and putting them back above .500.

For the Dodgers, it marked their first pinch-hit, walk-off homer since Scott Van Slyke hit one on Sept. 10, 2013.

“I just want to be a guy that impacts the game,” Thompson said.

Thompson’s blast preserved a strong outing from left-hander Alex Wood, who has allowed just three eaed runs in three starts at Dodger Stadium this season, including one over 6 1/3 iings Tuesday.

Wood has been far more erratic on the road, where he carries an 8.05 ERA and was roughed up in his most recent outing last week at Tampa Bay.

Back in the friendly confines of Chavez Ravine, he matched his season high with nine strikeouts and allowed only six base ruers. He was the Dodgers’ 10th starter in a row to post at least six strikeouts, the franchise’s longest such streak since at least 1913.

Wood’s showing helped offset the Dodgers’ slumping offense, which had scored just 37 runs in their first 14 home games.

The exception came in the bottom of the first iing when Chase Utley led off with a double before Corey Seager followed with one of his own – a line drive into the left-center field gap that scored Utley.

Seager made it 2-0 when he scored from third base on a sacrifice fly from Adrian Gonzalez.

The veteran first baseman added a ground ball single in the third iing, his first hit at Dodger Stadium since April 15, a drought that spaed 25 days and 34 consecutive at-bats.

Gonzalez nearly homered in the fifth. His line drive bounced off the top of the wall in center field, but the Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes was able to make a throw to second base, where Gonzalez was tagged out trying for a double.

Yasiel Puig, who was in a 1-for-15 slump entering the game went 1 for 4, beating out a ground ball in his first at-bat in the second and producing a handful of hard-hit flyouts.

The Mets’ runs off Wood came in the second iing when Cespedes scored on a throwing error by Utley and Mets catcher Kevin Plawecki followed with an RBI single.

Jacob deGrom, who held the Dodgers to two runs and struck out 20 in 13 iings in Games 1 and 5 of the National League Division Series last October, held them to two over seven iings Tuesday. He struck out four and walked none.
