After wiing the first two sets of its CIF Southe Section Division 3 quarterfinal match at El Segundo on Saturday, Valley Christian High’s boys volleyball team dropped the next two before responding in time for a 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 16-25, 15-8 win.

The Crusaders will host top-seeded Quartz Hill, which defeated San Luis Obispo in three sets, in the semifinals on Wednesday.

CATHEDRAL 3, WARREN 0 >> The season came to an end for the Bears (24-7) in the Division 3 quarterfinals with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-15 loss on the road.

Badminton

Plenty of local athletes shined Friday night at the CIF-SS Individual Championships and Qualifying Touament at the San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club and many qualified for next weekend’s CIF Regional Touament.

The top eight finishers in each category advance, and Poly led the way with eight qualifiers, the most in the section and the only team to produce an entrant in each event.

Eric Lam and Kristine Nguyen (Poly, second place) and Kyle Ngo and Katie Choi (Gahr, seventh) will advance in mixed doubles, while the teams of Raman Kooner and Eric Shu (Poly, third), Leo Ruan and Monik Gupta (Cerritos, fourth), Jacquelyn Kan and Janice Hui (Cerritos, first), Sydney Feandez and Cassandra Mullen (Poly, sixth) and Rosemarie Huynh and Briaa Khensovan (Jordan, eighth) will move on in boys and girls doubles, respectively.

On the singles side, Andrei Pedeal (Gahr, second), Sambo Kim (Poly, third), Maggie Kung (Cerritos, fifth) and Mary Nguyen (Poly, sixth) are moving on.

NCAA softball

Long Beach State 4-1, Hawaii 2-0 >> Long Beach State celebrated senior day with a pair of wins against Hawaii, taking the regular season-closing series.

The 49ers (32-30, 12-9 Big West Conference) took their first lead of the day in the fourth iing of the opener as Darian Tautalafua scored on a passed ball after leading off with a single and Nichole Fry produced an RBI single.

Hawaii (24-30, 8-13 Big West) tied it up at 2 in the sixth, before Irma Sanchez delivered the eventual game-wiing two-run single in the bottom of the frame.

Christina Clermont stuck out five in a complete-game victory and was at it again in game two in a battle with Kanani Aina Cabrales.

Clermont then went the distance again, holding the Rainbow Wahine at bay while Aina Cabrales kept Long Beach scoreless through five.

The junior struck out five and allowed just three hits for her seventh shutout of the season.

In the bottom of the sixth iing, Tierra Falo hit the game-wiing single for the only run of the game.

Long Beach will lea its postseason fate tonight when the NCAA playoff pairings are released at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
