Los Alamitos teis team falls in D1 quarterfinals; Wilson picks up big boys golf win

LOS ALAMITOS >> The season came to an end for Los Alamitos High’s boys teis team Monday afteoon after an 11-7 loss at home to University during the CIF Southe Section Division 1 quarterfinals.

The match was tied at 3 after the first round and the Griffins held a slim 24-23 edge in total games won, but the Trojans responded by taking the second and third, both 4-2.

Senior USC commit Riley Smith and Ethan Kolsky were each 3-0 in singles for Los Al, with University making its presence felt on the other side with an 8-1 edge in doubles.

Smith, whose older brother Taer is already on the USC roster where their dad, Peter, is the coach, was hoping for a retu trip to the Division 1 finals for the defending champion Griffins, but said he is proud of his high school career overall.

“Right now I’m pretty disappointed, but I really thought high school teis helped me, not only on the court, but in life,” he said. “I’ve gained so many close friends and it was such a great experience.”

Los Al coach Jordan Bridge had nothing but praise for his squad and the success it had this season after losing a number of players from last year’s roster.

“Just a great, great season for these guys,” he said. “I think there was a lot of speculation that we wouldn’t be as good losing a lot of seniors, but these guys showed that every year we’re going to come back tough no matter what.”

The Trojans will take on Peninsula or Palm Desert in the semifinals on Wednesday.

CERRITOS 10, WEST TORRANCE 8 >> In the CIF-SS Division 3, the Dons advanced with a win on the road and will play top-seeded Cypress in the semis.

DOWNEY 14, OAK HILLS 4 >> The Vikings punched their ticket to the Division 5 semifinals with a win at home and will face Rosemead on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Boys golf

Wilson High captured the CIF-SS Southe Division team championship with a score of 347 (13-under) at Mile Square Golf Course in Fountain Valley.

Hunter Epson, Andrew Feandes and Andre Calubid paced the Bruins with matching rounds of 3-under-par 69, while Tyler Schaffer and Brad Calubid each shot 70s.

Huntington Beach (372) placed second in the 19-team field, with Los Alamitos (374) tying for third, ahead of Millikan (394, sixth), Poly (404, 10th), Avalon (421, 15th) and Lakewood (436, 17th).

As the top two finishers, Wilson and Huntington Beach will go on to the CIF-SS Team Qualifier on Thursday at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs where they will compete against the teams that advanced from the six other divisions.

Of the 14 teams in the qualifier, the top four will ea a berth in the CIF Southe State Regional.

NCAA baseball

Long Beach State sophomore Darren McCaughan has been named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week after delivering the Dirtbags’ first complete game of the season in a one-hit shutout of San Jose State on Saturday.

He only allowed two Spartans to reach base while striking out six and walking none.

The Los Alamitos High alum is now the conference’s leader in eaed run average (2.10) and batting average against (.186). He also ranks second with eight wins.

This is the third weekly award for the Dirtbags this season, the second for McCaughan, to go with one for Taer Brown.
