LONG BEACH >> Seven Long Beach girls water polo teams were included in the CIF Southe Section playoff pairings released on Saturday.
Los Alamitos is the only local team in the CIF-SS Division 1 bracket. The Griffins (17-12, 5-0) went undefeated in the Sunset League to take the championship and scored 60 goals in five league games. They didn’t make the top 10 poll this week but will host No. 8 Santa Barbara in one of eight first-round games. The Dons went 4-4 in the strong Chael League. Los Alamitos has reached the second round in each of the last three seasons.
The Moore League is in Division 2, where 10-time defending champion Long Beach Wilson (10-16, 5-0) will host No. 9 Dana Hills. The No. 8 Bruins split two very close games against the Dolphins this season. Dana Hills (14-15, 4-4) came to the Belmont Outdoor Pool in December and pulled out a 9-8 nonleague victory. Wilson got some revenge in a San Diego touament late last month with a 6-5 overtime win.
“It’s tuing into a rivalry,” Wilson head coach Jeff Nesmith said of the matchup. “The girls are fired up for this one.”
Long Beach Poly, who finished second in the Moore League, will travel to Los Osos. The No. 4 Grizzlies (22-7, 10-0) are on an eight-game wiing streak and have scored 371 goals this season. Third-place Lakewood will get the action started in the wild-card round on Tuesday at Murrieta Mesa. The Rams (22-5, 4-2) are out of the Southweste League and won four of their last five games. The wier will face No. 2 El Toro.
The San Gabriel Valley League champion Warren is in Division 4 and is ranked No. 7 in the final poll. Warren will host the wild-card round wier between Capistrano Valley and Claremont. On the top half of the bracket with No. 1 Royal, St. Joseph will visit No. 8 Trabuco Hills while Cerritos travels to No. 5 Ayala.
