Area roundup: Cerritos College wins women's state track and field title; Dirtbags run streak to eight

The Cerritos College women’s track and field team captured its second consecutive CCCAA State championship and sixth in 11 seasons Saturday afteoon at Mesa College in San Diego.

The group gaered seven first-place finishes – Najia Hudspeth (200 meters, 23.69 seconds), Hudspeth, Nylia Hudspeth, Rabia Hawes and Meka Story (400 relay, 46.00), Bria Palmer (high jump), Destiny Talalemotu (hammer, discus, shot put) and Juanita Webster (heptathlon).

Talalemotu (Millikan HS) paced the effort with her three first-place finishes as the Falcons totaled 92 points, 12 ahead of second-place Riverside City.

The men’s squad placed sixth, finishing with 43 total points.

Vincent Calhoun (Poly HS) notched a second-place finish in the high jump, while Stacy Chukwumezie (Downey HS) and Tristian Escobar came in third in the long jump and javelin, respectively.

NCAA baseball

LONG BEACH STATE 14, UC DAVIS 1 >> The No. 25 Dirtbags (34-18, 13-7 Big West) won their eighth game in a row with a thrashing of the Aggies (16-33, 4-16) on the road, matching their season-high in runs.

Every LBSU player who made a plate appearance recorded at least one hit, led by sophomore Brock Lundquist, who tallied a career-high with five hits (two doubles) en route to three RBIs.

He has now hit safely in 16 consecutive games. Leadoff man Jarren Duran also matched a career high with three runs. He doubled twice, walked twice and drove in two.

Luke Rasmussen had two hits as well, including a three-run double in the second iing that put LBSU up 4-0.

The Dirtbags doubled seven times, their highest total since 2010. The team also drew eight walks, leading to the high run total, despite leaving 13 ruers on base.

Darren McCaughan picked up the win, his ninth of the season after seven iing. He finished with two strikeouts and a walk while dropping his eaed run average to 2.04.

Long Beach State will aim for the sweep today at 1 p.m.

Senior Taer Brown (6-3, 3.58 ERA) will take the mound against senior Nat Hamby (3-5, 4.99).

NCAA softball

LONG BEACH STATE 9, FORDHAM 1 (6 Iings) >> The 49ers built a big lead with four runs in the third iing and scored in every frame except the second on the way a win in their elimination game at the NCAA Regional in Eugene, Ore.

Christina Clermont got the win while striking out five and allowing one walk and one run on three hits.

Darian Tautalafua and Nichole Fry each homered and drove in three to pace the offense while Julia Lombardi and Haley Tobler also hit solo home runs for Long Beach.

Center fielder Sydney Canessa hit a fifth-iing homer to provide Fordham’s lone run.

With the win, LBSU forced a rematch with Baylor, set for 7:15 p.m.

The Bears defeated the 49ers 3-2 on Friday.
