Long Beach State president Jane Close Conoley aounced Wednesday that Cindy Masner will serve as interim athletic director effective immediately.

Masner has worked within the LBSU athletics program for more than 30 years as the senior women’s administrator and senior associate athletic director. She also served as the department’s interim AD for 10 months in the 2005-06 school year during the search process which resulted in the hiring of Vic Cegles.

Masner is currently in charge of inteal operations of the school’s athletic department, including compliance, sports medicine and the strength and conditioning program. She is also the sport supervisor for 10 programs and has served on a number of Big West Conference and NCAA oversight selection and rules committees.

Cegles aounced on May 19 he was leaving to take a position at Coecticut.

Baseball

There is no shortage of Long Beach State players on the All-Big West team, which was aounced Wednesday afteoon.

Sophomore starting pitcher Darren McCaughan was selected Pitcher of the Year and junior shortstop Garrett Hampson was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Six of the 15 first-teamers hail from Long Beach: Sophomore catcher David Banuelos, senior third baseman Zack Domingues, sophomore designated hitter Luke Rasmussen and junior reliever Austin McGeorge. Junior first baseman Daniel Jackson and sophomore outfielder Brock Lundquist were named to the second team.

It is the first time the Dirtbags have produced six first team members since 1992. Hampson makes his third consecutive appearance. He has a .988 fielding percentage with just three errors while playing every iing at shortstop this season. He was the 2014 Freshman of the Year and is the first player in program history to win Defensive Player of the Year honors.

McCaughan led the conference with a 1.98 eaed-run average, was second in opponent’s batting average (.191), second in wins (10), third in iings pitched (104.1) and tied for seventh in strikeouts (79). He finished the regular season with 13 quality starts in 15 outings.

Lundquist and Rasmussen eaed Big West honors for the second season in a row and Banuelos, Domingues, Jackson and McGeorge are all first-timers.

In the midst of its wiingest season since 2008, LBSU is in Miami this weekend for the NCAA Regional. Long Beach faces Florida Atlantic in its postseason opener on Friday at 10 a.m. All games from the regional are available live on ESPN3. Prep swimming

Two Warren High swimmers tued in huge performances as last month’s San Gabriel Valley League finals, as junior Megan Henry broke the league record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.09 time and senior Edgar Fabian did the same in the 100 backstroke (57.34).
