SoCal Prep Legends Girls Athlete of the Year Finalists: Destiny Collins, Courtney Corrin, Valerie Higgins, Norene Iosia, Ena Shibahara

Throughout the school year, SoCal Prep Legends has recognized the best high school student-athletes in Southe Califoia. The Southe Califoia Toyota Dealers SoCal Prep Legends Awards will reveal the wiers in 11 categories, including boys and girls Athlete of the Year, June 10 on KABC Chael 7 immediately following the NBA Finals.

Here are the nominees for the SoCal Prep Legends Girls Athlete of the Year:

Destiny Collins, Great Oak cross country/track

Classified by her head coach Doug Soles as the perfect student-athlete, Collins left behind a legacy that will drop jaws and pop eyes for a long time. In the fall she doublied by wiing the CIF Southe Section and CIF State Division 1 titles in cross country while leading her team to the CIF-SS Division 1 team title. In the spring, her dominance continued in track. She captured CIF-SS Division 1 titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and won the 3,200 meters championship at the Masters, which matches the best from Southe Calfironia. Just last year Collins qualified to compete in the World Youth Qualifier 3,000 meter’s for the United States where she eaed the right to compete for her country in Colombia.

Courtney Corrin, Harvard-Westlake soccer/track

Corrin is a two-time defending CIF State long jump champion and three-time Los Angeles Daily News Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. The USC-bound athlete is also a standout in soccer, which eaed her an All CIF Division 1 selection after leading the Wolverines to the quarterfinals. Despite an injury to her toe in her senior season, she is recognized as one of Southe Califoia’s best female prep athletes by the Southe Califoia News Group prep staff.

Valerie Higgins, Chaminade basketball

The USC-bound Higgins stuffed the box score on a nightly basis with 20.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 6.1 steals and 2.2 blocks per game in eaing the CIF-SS Open Division Player of the Year award. Higgins was part of a one-two punch that also included Duke-bound Leaoa Odom that rolled to a second straight CIF Open Division State title. Higgins was recently called up to compete for the USA Under-18 National Team for the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championships, ruing July 13-17 in Chile.

Norene Iosia, Redondo Union volleyball

Iosia’s second CIF State title culminated a storied four-year run for Redondo Union. During her four years, Redondo had a record of 143-18. This season, the Hawaii-commit recorded well over 500 assists, 70 aces and almost 200 for the Sea Hawks, including a season-high 40 assists against league rival Mira Costa in a 3-0 sweep. Iosia showed tremendous resilience in her senior year after losing a tough four-set loss to Mater Dei in the CIF-SS Division 1-AA final, but bounced back for the eventual CIF State title run.

Ena Shibahara, Palos Verdes Peninsula teis

Shibahara, Peninsula’s UCLA-bound superstar, will head to Westwood as one of the most decorated teis players in Southe Califoia history. She’s part of three CIF Southe Section team titles, three CIF Southe Califoia Regional team championships, three CIF-SS singles titles, and four Daily Breeze Girls Teis Player of the Year honors. Shibahara was undefeated in high school the past three years and only lost three times in her career.
