SoCal Prep Legends Boys Scholar Athlete of the Year Finalists: Christian Juzang, Eric Markes, Miles President, Isaac Cortes, Alex Mattison, Duncan Mactavish, Jack Koulos

Throughout the school year, SoCal Prep Legends has recognized the best high school student-athletes in Southe Califoia. The Southe Califoia Toyota Dealers SoCal Prep Legends Awards will reveal the wiers in 11 categories, including boys and girls scholar Athletes of the Year, June 10 on KABC Chael 7 immediately following the NBA Finals.

Here are the nominees for the SoCal Prep Legends Boys Scholar Athlete of the Year:

Christian Juzang, Viewpoint

Juzang is a Harvard-commit that boasts a 3.8 GPA and displays a big heart in his local community. Juzang is part of a mission called “Project Knapsack”, which provides backpacks and supplies for children in Africa along with a pen pal system between African and American students. Juzang was recently named the CIF Southe Section Division 4A Player of the Year after leading the Viewpoint boys basketball team to the 4A crown. Juzang is also the first 2000-point scorer in Viewpoint’s program.

Eric Markes, Sierra Canyon

The University of Pesylvania football commit is just as impressive on the field, as he is off. Markes carries a 4.3 GPA, is a member of the Chess Club and is also in an honors engineering class, which are just a few notable marks that highlight his outstanding resume. Markes totaled 1,587 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns in his career offensively, while stacking 94 tackles as a defensive back. He also has 894 retu yards and three punt retus for touchdowns during his time at Sierra Canyon, which adds to his value as a top recruit for Pe.

Miles President, Ayala

If President’s 4.1 GPA isn’t impressive enough, his 2,350 SAT score and perfect score on the ACT should. He plans to attend Harvey Mudd College and major in engineering (Caltech was his second choice). On the basketball court, he averaged 17 points per game for Ayala, which won a CIF-Southe Section Division 2AA Championship and advanced to the state title game in Sacramento.

Isaac Cortes, Great Oak

Cortes holds a 4.49 GPA and is a state and national champion in cross country. Cortes had quite a senior year. He won the Milrose Mile Indoor in New York City, and was part of the 1,600 relay that just set a national record. He also won the 800 and 1,600 meters at the Southweste League track championships, setting a meet record in the 1,600. Cortes has accepted a scholarship offer to Stanford.

Alex Mattison, San Beardino

Mattison carries a 4.38 GPA and is in the dual-immersion program, taking classes in English and Spanish. In addition, he has been in the Spanish national honors society the last three years and was the overall wier of the prestigious Ken Hubbs Award, which goes to the top senior scholar-athlete among 25 high schools in the San Beardino area. Mattison is a three-sport athlete, competing in football, wrestling and track. He rushed for 2,057 yards and 22 touchdowns, eaing a scholarship to Boise State.

Duncan Mactavish, Palos Verdes

Mactavish is known as the man in the middle for his Palos Verdes boys water polo team. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound, two-meter man is a two-time all-area first-team selection for the Daily Breeze and is part of the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program, which includes a youth national team selection and USA Water Polo Cadet National team selection.. He carries an outstanding 4.68 GPA and is headed to Stanford in the fall.

Jack Koulos, Long Beach Wilson

Koulos is the valedictorian at Wilson, and that’s just the latest honor for the multi-sport athlete. After playing three season at quarterback for the football team and three years with baseball and the campus’ club hockey team, Koulos was given a CIF Champion For Character award this year while carrying a weighted 4.6 GPA. He’ll attend the University of Michigan in the fall, and plans on majoring in neuroscience and minoring in psychology or business finance.
