SoCal Prep Legends Girls Scholar Athlete of the Year Finalists: Gloria Bates, Camryn Purdom, Alison Chang, Devon Jack, Roxy Barahman, Sarah Kretschmar, Emily Knous

Throughout the school year, SoCal Prep Legends has recognized the best high school student-athletes in Southe Califoia. The Southe Califoia Toyota Dealers SoCal Prep Legends Awards will reveal the wiers in 11 categories, including boys and girls scholar Athletes of the Year, Friday on KABC Chael 7 immediately following the NBA Finals.

Here are the nominees for the SoCal Prep Legends Girls Scholar Athlete of the Year:

Gloria Bates, Orange Lutheran

Bates holds a 4.62 GPA and was named Orange Lutheran’s AP chemistry student of the year as a junior. The basketball standout eaed back-to-back CIF Southe Section player of the year awards, eaing the 3A achievement in 2015 and 3AA honor this past season. Bates also was the leading scorer in both championship titles games in those consecutive seasons. Bates is a member of the National Honor Society and Califoia Scholarship Federation and will attend Claremont McKea College where she plans to study bio-chemistry.

Camryn Purdom, Valley View

The girls volleyball standout is a salutatorian of her graduating class and a recipient of the Riverside County Excellence Award. She has been a member of the Black Student Union for four years and served as the union president during her senior year. Purdom also is a past president of the Eagle Scholars. Athletically, Purdon’s volleyball accolades include a CIF-SS Division 3AA title and being named the 3AA player of the year. She also was named the Inland Valley league most valuable player, and was selected to the CIF All-State Team while maintaining a 4.511 GPA.

Alison Chang, Walnut

Chang helped Walnut win three CIF Southe Section girls golf championships and finished second in the CIF-SS individuals and helped Walnut to two ruer-up CIF State finishes. Chang’s 4.70 GPA has made her a valedictorian candidate and also a state finalist for scholar-athlete honors. She is on the school newspaper, is the yearbook editor-in-chief and will continue her athletic and academic career at Princeton.

Devon Jack, San Marino

Jack reached the CIF Southe Section individual teis semifinals her senior season and also won the out-of-season Ojai touament in doubles. Her accomplishments on the teis court have eaed her Top 10 rankings in Southe Califoia and she is amongst the top 50 in the nation. She is a two-time high school All-American and back-to-back wier of the Southe Califoia Teis Association’s Sportsmanship Award. She has a 4.5 GPA and is a four-year member and seal bearer of the Califoia Scholarship Federation. She volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House and San Marino chapter of the National Charity League. She will play teis at Brown and study medicine.

Roxy Barahman, Oaks Christian

Barahman carries a 4.39 GPA and has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. Barahman is a member of The National Society of High School Scholars and takes rigorous courses such as Honors Argumentation and American Ideology and the highest level of AP Calculus. Her compassion can be observed in her work with Special Olympics athletes through the Project Unify Club and in her interactions with senior citizens. Barahman has been an All-League first-team selection her entire high school basketball career and will be attending Yale University next year, where she’ll also play basketball.

Sarah Kretschmar, Diamond Ranch

Kretschmar has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll all four years at Diamond Ranch High School and received the Panther of the Year award in both her sophomore and junior years. The three-sport athlete has an accumulative GPA of 4.6 while playing volleyball, basketball, and softball. Some of her most recent athletic achievements include MVP of her basketball and volleyball team. She will be attending Concordia University, Irvine and play softball.

Emily Knous, Long Beach Poly

Emily Knous is one of the best soccer players and students in Southe Califoia. In the classroom, she has a weighted 4.5 GPA and a 4.0 unweighted GPA after wrapping up her tenth grade year in Poly’s prestigious PACE magnet. Knous has never received a grade other than “A” in her life. On the field, she’s a member of the USA youth soccer national team and has helped lead Poly to two Moore League titles and two deep playoff runs. She’s verbally committed to Arizona, where she plans to major in business marketing.
