LA Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu restarting rehab assignment today

SAN FRANCISCO >> Once more with feeling.

Left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu will restart his minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment Sunday with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. Ryu is scheduled to throw two iings and approximately 30 pitches.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated the rehab assignment will last four-five starts.

Ryu has already tried this once. Trying to retu from surgery to repair a to labrum over a year ago, Ryu made three rehab starts in May (two with Rancho Cucamonga and one with Triple-A Oklahoma City). After a four-iing outing with the OKC Dodgers on May 25, Ryu experienced discomfort in his shoulder and his rehab was shut down.

The progression will start again Sunday, Roberts said. The Dodgers manager said there have been enough stops and starts in Ryu’s rehab that he has a lot to prove before the Dodgers will start figuring him into their plans.

“Yeah. It’s nothing about Ryu. It’s just more that we need to really focus on the guys we have here,” Roberts said. “When he does come back ... that will just enhance what we have.

“With the way that it’s gone, we’ve got to have assurance that he can hold his stuff and maintain health. ... When you’ve accrued all this time on the disabled list, we’ve got to have confidence that he’s not going to go back once we’ve made that decision (to activate him).”

Outfielder Jose Tabata was activated from Triple-A Oklahoma City’s disabled list and given his release Saturday. Tabata, 27, was acquired by the Dodgers from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline last year and never appeared in a game with the Dodgers. He is, however, eaing $4.5 million this season (plus $250,000 for a buyout of an option year in 2017) in the final year of a six-year contract extension given to him by the Pirates in August 2011. Tabata hit .244 in 30 games for the OKC Dodgers this season.
