Long Beach State men’s golf senior Daniel Chian won the individual medalist honor at the Folino Invitational by firing a 2-under-par 70 in Tuesday’s final round at Industry Hills Golf Club. This is his second career touament victory, the last one coming in 2013, and also a third top-10 finish this year.
Meanwhile, Long Beach State posted a team-low 291 to move up one spot to finish in second place at 22-over, 12 shots behind team champion Samford. Long Beach State senior Michael Chen carded a 72 to tie for ninth at 5-over, and freshman Patrick Pockels shot a 78 to tie for 30th at 14-over.
Long Beach State retus to action Feb. 29-Mar. 1 when it hosts the 20th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.
Senior All-American candidate Kassidy Teare finished ruer-up after Monday’s final round of the All There August Challenge while the 49ers also finished second at Landa Park Golf Course in New Braunfels, Texas.
Long Beach State was 31-over par to tie with with Middle Teessee, five shots behind team champion Sam Houston State. Sophomore Jeifer Yu and freshman Haley Tygret tied for 23rd at 12-over for the 49ers.
Teare fired a 2-under 69 on the final day to jump five spots in the standings, just one stroke off individual medalist Julie Houston of UTSA. Teare only made one bogey and 14 pars on Monday in her second consecutive ruer-up performance.
Long Beach State will host The Gold Rush Touament on Monday and Tuesday at Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. The 49ers won this title last year by 19 shots while Teare was ruer-up on the individual side. This year’s 15-team field features USC, No. 28 BYU, Boston College, UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton.
“This year’s Gold Rush field will be our strongest in the five years we have hosted,” Long Beach State head coach Joey Cerulle said. “We look to forward to playing with some of the top players in the country while defending our home course and title.”
The top-ranked 49ers (11-2, 8-2 MPSF) are back in Walter Pyramid tonight to host MPSF foe UC San Diego at 7. The Tritons (3-11, 0-10 MPSF) trail the all-time series with Long Beach State 61-5 and have lost seven consecutive meetings. Long Beach State maintained its No. 1 spot in the AVCA Men’s Division I-II Coaches Poll with 18 of 20 first-place votes. This is the first time in 10 years that the 49ers have been No. 1 in consecutive weeks.

A 5 p.m. tipoff Thursday at UC Riverside might be the most important Big West Conference road game for the 49ers (18-6, 7-3 Big West), who are in a three-way tie for second place behind the Highlanders (17-7, 10-0), who haven’t lost since since December. UC Riverside senior guard Brittany Crain leads the Big West with 21 points per game and the Highlanders, the highest scoring team in the conference with 78.1 points.
Sophomore Gabe Levin won the Big West Player of the Week award after averaged 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds last week while shooting 62.5 percent from the field. The award is the first for the forward. On Saturday at UC Davis, Levin provided the offense in a 57-48 win with a career-high 23 points and 12 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season.
Three straight 6-1 victories have greeted Long Beach State to start the 2016 campaign. On Saturday the 49ers (3-0) beat Loyola Marymount and impressed their head coach. The top of the Long Beach State lineup delivered as Hayley Thompson and Laura Eales teamed up for a 6-4 win at top doubles while Julie Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa were 6-2 wiers at the No. 2 pairs spot. Razakasoa won eight straight games a the No. 1 singles and Ebba Unden won at the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-1. Long Beach State is in Arizona this weekend to face the Wildcats on Saturday and Arizona State on Sunday.
