Fishing records to be reviewed by the IGFA

The IGFA Worlds Committee has a slate of records to review this month, including six saltwater highlights fish.

Anglers in Austrailia on both sides of the Pacifiic are waiting for IGFA approval of the new black bass grouper, Atlantic snook, Pacific halibut and southe bluefin tuna.

But one record is drawing more attention than the other, Guy Yocum’s special attention for application for a yellowfin tuna record.

At 427 pounds caught off the coast of San Lucas, Mexico, Yocum was fishing off his boat El Supertudo and needed only 50 minutes to land the massive tuna after he swallowed a chunked yellow tuna piece, but he took too much time getting the prize to the scales after he fileted a chunk on the boat.

Two local SoCal fishermen, Cal Van Zant and Jim Krause, spent last Friday and Saturday night catching squid to mainly fish for white sea bass and it was successful both nights for limits. Although the fish were small, they filled their three-fish limits.

In the search for squid they spent time on Izor’s Reef down to the 105 and doubled their intake.

If you are waiting for the the squid encore, it is definitely here. The sportboat Oceanside 95 caught 86 yellows at an oveighter to San Clemente Island, while the guys picked off that moon light and caught a 45-pound pound sea bass.

DRONES >> For sure it’s a brand new craze. Flying kites for bill fishing is also a new craze, but not as crazy as using airplanes to troll and identify fish breaking the surface of the water.

Currently, there are at least three different bill fishermen sending drones over the marlin waters.

We haven’t heard the results of this new technique, but the idea is to drop a live bait off the drone right in the middle of a wild boiling school of tuna or beside a sleeping swordfish and guide the drone somehow on a landing patte back to the fishing tackle mother ship.

As of this writing the live bait or lure is “jerked” off the drone.

HUNTING >> The 2016 season is here with the Sept. 1 opening of dove season. Actually, Friday opens the Califoia hunting season.

It also means all hunters must purchase a new hunting license.

Also new for 2016 is the new regulation that requires the use of non-lead ammunition for all game with the exception of snipes, quail and doves.
