Forcella steps downs as Avalon football coach after championship season

Avalon High football coach Mike Forcella aounced over the weekend that he is stepping down from his position with the Lancers.

Forcella has been with the team for five years (four as defensive coordinator) and after helping lead the team to its first 8-Man CIF Southe Section title in his first as head coach last season, decided that it is simply time to move on, at least from football.

“It was an honor to lead last season’s team to the undefeated CIF championship,” he said. “I will still be working with the youth in Avalon, just not in the capacity I have been, at least for this time.”

Ruben Segura, who has been with the program since its inception in 1995, will be taking over as head coach.

“He has been a coach that has done everything he could and never wants recognition for it,” Forcella said of Segura. “I credit a lot of last season’s success toward the efforts put in by coach Segura and I am excited to see what he will do. He is the perfect guy for the job.”

After going 11-0 last season and outscoring their opponents 715-72, the Lancers have a lot to live up to and will begin their title defense September 2 when they play their home opener against Julian.
