Brock Stewart battered by one rough iing in Dodgers debut

MILWAUKEE >> Four out of Brock Stewart’s five iings in his major-league debut went very well.

But things went horribly wrong in the second iing. The Milwaukee Brewers scored five times in the second and went on to beat the Dodgers, 7-0, Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Stewart’s rise from Class-A to the majors this season started by striking out the first two big-league hitters he faced and retiring the first four.

But Chris Carter’s broken-bat dribbler to the right side of the infield went for a hit with the Dodgers shifted to the left. Aaron Hill followed with a soft single to right and Kirk Nieuwenhuis sliced a 385-foot drive just over the wall in left field for a three-run home run.

After a fly out, two more hits, including one by Brewers starter Junior Guerra, a walk loaded the bases for Ryan Braun. Braun sent a double off the wall in right-center field for two more runs.

Stewart made it through five iings without surrendering any more runs. Braun did hit a two-run home run in the seventh off reliever Chris Hatcher.

It didn’t really matter. The Dodgers managed just two hits in the game against Guerra and Brewers reliever Michael Blazek.

A 2014 draftee out of Illinois State, Stewart needed just two years to make it to the majors. Guerra took a much more difficult route. The 31-year-old rookie spent eight years in the minors, played in four countries (the U.S., Mexico, Italy and his native Venezuela) and served one PED suspension before debuting briefly with the Chicago White Sox last season.

Just four Dodgers reached base in his eight scoreless iings Wednesday, two walks and two hits; a first-iing double by Corey Seager (extending his hit streak to 12 games) and a leadoff single by Yasiel Puig in the fifth.

Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez wasn’t around for most of it. He was ejected from the game by third-base umpire Dan Bellino after a strikeout in the fourth iing. Gonzalez was unhappy with a checked-swing call that ended Saturday’s loss in Pittsburgh. Bellino made a similar call during Gonzalez’s fourth-iing at-bat Wednesday. When he also swung at a ball in the dirt to strike out, Gonzalez gestured toward Bellino, clearly indicating that he had gone around on that swing (unlike the earlier one) and then waving dismissively toward the umpire. Bellino ejected him at that point.
