Long Beach State begins baseball season with 7-1 victory at home

The Long Beach State Dirtbags opened the 2016 baseball season Friday night with a 7-1 win over Holy Cross at Blair Field.

Sophomore Luke Rasmussen went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while sophomore Darren McCaughan picked up the win on the mound after allowing three hits and one run over seven iings.

The teams will meet again today at 2 p.m.

NCAA men’s basketball

Long Beach State (14-12, 8-3 Big West Conference) retus home tonight when it plays host to Cal State Fullerton (9-16, 2-10) at 7:30 p.m. in the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals.

The 49ers are riding a five-game wiing streak, while the Titans have lost four in a row.

Long Beach currently sits in third place in the conference standings behind Hawaii (21-3, 10-1) and UC Irvine (20-7, 9-2) and has upcoming matchups with both.

Nick Faust leads LBSU, averaging 17.2 points and six rebounds per game.

The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.

WARREN 3, MOORPARK 0 >> The Bears rolled in the opening round of the CIF Southe Section Division 1 playoffs at home and will face the Edison-St. Francis wier in the second round Wednesday.

ROYAL 1, DOWNEY 0 >> The Vikings kept it close, but couldn’t come up with the equalizer on the road during the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

CABRILLO 1, SCHURR 0 (2 OT) >> Ruben Ortiz netted a free kick from 45 yards out in the 95th minute to give the Jaguars a win in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

JORDAN 1, EL RANCHO 0 >> Also in Division 2 action, the Panthers will advance after Nicolas Vasquez notched the game’s lone goal in the 10th minute.

Jordan will host Bell Gardens, a team it defeated on penalty kicks earlier in the season, in the second round Wednesday afteoon.

ARTESIA 2, CARPINTERIA 1 >> The Pioneers’ lead tued out to be enough to withstand a late Carpinteria goal and punch their ticket to the second round of the Division 4 playoffs, where they will face Chaparral on the road Wednesday at 3 p.m.

BELLFLOWER 1, PACIFICA 0 >> Also in Division 4, Christian Pinzon scored to give the Bucs a shutout victory at home.

VALLEY CHRISTIAN 2, CAMS 0 >> Blake Christensen and Clay D’Amico each scored on penalty kicks to lead the Crusaders to a shutout victory in the opening round of Division 6 playoff action.

V.C. will play the wier of the St. Margaret’s-San Marino matchup on Wednesday.

ST. ANTHONY 4, AGBU 1 >> Freshman Christian Feandez wasted little time getting the scoring started with a goal in the second minute of this Division 7 opening-round contest.

Fellow freshman Evan Vance delivered goals in the 27th and 58th minutes before senior captain Bryan Zamora added one in the 61st.

ST. ANTHONY 1, SOUTHLANDS CHRISTIAN 0 >> The Saints netted the only goal of the contest early when Hailey Gibbons coected on a header after a cross from Sofia Goldschmidt.

St. Anthony will travel to Ojai to face Thacher in the second round on Tuesday afteoon.
