One strike from victory, Dodgers lose 2-1 in extra iings

PHOENIX >> The Dodgers were one pitch away from a 1-0 victory Saturday at Chase Field, but the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to tie the game in the ninth iing against All-Star closer Kenley Jansen and then won it, 2-1, in the 12th iing.

The Diamondbacks’ Jake Lamb was the local hero in both iings. His RBI double off Jansen tied the game in the ninth and he led off the 12th with a triple into the right-field coer. He scored the wiing run on a walk-off single by Brandon Drury.

Right-hander Brandon McCarthy pitched six scoreless iings in his third start since retuing from Tommy John surgery, allowing three hits, walking none and striking out eight.

But the Dodgers could hand Jansen only a 1-0 lead in the ninth thanks to an offense that stranded 15 baseruers and went 1 for 15 with ruers in scoring position.

Their only run came in the third iing when Chase Utley led off with a double, went to third on a groundout by Corey Seager and scored when Justin Tuer flared an RBI single to right field.

The Dodgers stranded the bases loaded in the seventh and again in the 11th. Howie Kendrick had four hits in the game but struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh. Yasiel Puig grounded out with the bases loaded in the 11th.

Protecting that one-run lead in the ninth, Jansen gave up a one-out single to Michael Bou, who stole second base to get into scoring position. Jansen got Paul Goldschmidt to pop out for the second out but Lamb ripped a 2-2 cutter to the wall in left field for a game-tying RBI double. Lamb had been hitless in seven previous at-bats against Jansen.

It was Jansen’s fourth blown save of the season. All four have come on the road against NL West teams — two in San Diego, one in San Francisco and now one in Arizona.

The game stayed tied into the 12th when Lamb led off with his triple off Dodgers reliever Casey Fien. After intentionally walking the next two batters to load the bases, the Dodgers went to a five-man infield.

It didn’t matter. Drury lined a single into right field to drive in the wiing run.

The game was played with only three umpires after home plate umpire Dale Scott left with an apparent injury. Scott was hit in the facemask by a foul ball just two pitches into the bottom of the first iing. First-base umpire Lance Barrett moved behind the plate for the rest of the game.
