
This summer has been full of youth baseball success for teams across greater Long Beach, and two more picked up touament titles over the last week.
The Long Beach Los Altos 8U All-Stars, nicknamed the Big Red Machine, won the Pacific Southwest Regional in Utah last week for the first time in 10 years. Los Altos edged Riverton, Utah 11-9 in the semifinal before rolling over Rohnert Park 13-3 in the championship game.
Los Altos pitcher Wade Latham led the way in the championship game with six strikeouts in three iings while picking up two hits. Cole Mountain got the start and the win after leaving in the fourth iing with a 6-3 lead. The pitching duo combined for 34 strikeouts in 21 iings at the regional.
Beie Howard and Nico Villafana led Los Altos with nine hits in the regional. Latham and Villafana each led the team with 10 runs, and Anthony Ward drove in a team-high six runs.
In other local baseball news, Long Beach Whaley PONY beat the Emerald Cowboys 11-9 in the ruer-up game of the Super Regional Final Four on Tuesday. That means Whaley PONY will move on to the West Zone Touament Thursday night in West Covina, where Long Beach will take on the hosts at 7.
This is the sixth year in a row that Whaley PONY is going to the West Zone bracket, and the eighth time in the last 10 years.
