Phil Reedy still tied for first at Long Beach Open golf tournament

David Gazzolo of Riverside joined Phil Reedy of Henderson, Nevada tied atop the leaderboard of the 2016 Long Beach Open on Friday. The second rounds were played at El Dorado Golf Course and Skylinks Golf Course.

Gazzolo jumped six spots with an 8-under-par 64 to move to 14-under after two rounds. Reedy shot 66 after an 8-under round on Thursday after finishing the first round tied for first. Zane Thomas of Las Vegas is one shot back after a 66 Friday. Blake Schmitt of Palm Desert jumped 105 spots to ninth after an impressive 10-under-par 62 on Friday.

American Golf has guaranteed this year’s purse at $170,000, and it’s part of the aual Long Beach Golf Festival.

The top 60 golfers will play the final two weekend rounds at El Dorado starting today. The leaders will tee off around 10 a.m.

NCAA Track & Field

Long Beach State had four individual athletes receive 2016 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic recognition while both men’s and women’s squads were selected as All-Academic Teams, the USTFCCCA aounced on Thursday.

The LBSU women, who posted a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.02, have received All-Academic Team honors every year since 1997. The LBSU men eaed the award for the fourth consecutive season with a 3.17 team GPA.

Riley Cooks, Fatima Vergara, Robert Marlow and Michael Montgomery eaed the individual accolades. To be eligible for all-academic honors, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships.

PONY Baseball

Long Beach rolled over Arizona at the West Zone Touament in West Covina on Friday afteoon, and advance to play again at 3:30 p.m. today.
