Area roundup: St. Anthony cruises into girls basketball quarterfinals

St. Anthony High’s girls basketball team had absolutely no trouble Saturday night in its second-round CIF Southe Section Division 4A contest, rolling to an 80-16 victory at University Prep.

The loss was the first of the season for the Jaguars (22-1).

The Saints will host Mayfield in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Girls water polo

ROYAL 23, ST. JOSEPH 7 >> The Jesters had no answer for Royal’s scoring attack as their season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the Division 4 playoffs.

RIVERSIDE POLY 11, WARREN 8 >> Also in Division 4, the Bears couldn’t quite keep up as they suffered a quarterfinal loss on the road.

College baseball

LONG BEACH STATE 2, HOLY CROSS 1 >> The Dirtbags improved to 2-0 behind solid pitching from senior Taer Brown (seven-plus iings, three hits, one walk, six strikeouts) and freshman Chris Rivera, who picked up his first career save.

LBSU produced seven hits for the second game in a row, scoring twice in the sixth iing after shortstop Garrett Hampson opened the frame with a bunt single.

He was sacrificed to second by Jarren Duran, then moved to third as an error put ruers at the coers for Brock Lundquist, who singled to right to score Hampson.

After a walk loaded the bases, Zack Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home the eventual game-wiing run.

Long Beach State will look for the sweep today as Dave Smith makes his first start for Long Beach. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Blair Field.

Women’s basketball

LONG BEACH STATE 58, UC SANTA BARBARA 55 >> In a game that featured 18 lead changes, LBSU (19-7, 8-4 Big West Conference) prevailed on the road behind 19 second-half points from Raven Benton.

The junior delivered a three-point play with 17.9 seconds remaining to put the 49ers ahead, completing her recovery from a scoreless first half during which she had to sit due to foul trouble.

She was 7 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line after the break and now has 997 career points, putting her three away from becoming the 24th 49er to join the 1,000-point club.

Long Beach State wraps up its three-game road stretch at Cal Poly on Wednesday.

Men’s volleyball

LONG BEACH STATE 3, UC IRVINE 0 >> The top-ranked 49ers (13-2, 10-2 MPSF) won their seventh consecutive contest Friday night and notched their third sweep in a row with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 victory over No. 11 UC Irvine at home.

Freshman Kyle Ensing anchored LBSU with 10 kills while hitting at a.318 clip to go with four blocks and two aces.

Freshman TJ DeFalco, junior Bryce Yould and senior Taylor Gregory finished with seven kills apiece.

Long Beach State embarks a four-match road stretch next week when it heads to Hawai’i to face the fifth-ranked Rainbow Warriors on Wednesday and Friday.
