Rio 2016 Olympics: Abbey Weitzeil helps U.S. relay team to silver in 4x100 free

Abbey Weitzeil of Saugus earned her first Olympic medal, helping the U.S. women’s team to a silver in the 4x100 meters relay on Sunday.

The U.S. team of Simone Manuel, Weitzeil, Dana Vollmer and Katie Ledecki finished with a time of 3 minutes, 31.89 seconds, behind the Australian team of Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell and Cate Campbell, which set a world record at 3:30.65.

Weitzeil swam the fastest leg for the American team in 52.56 and the U.S. team had a lead after her leg.

Weitzeil, a 19-year-old from Canyons Aquatic Club in Santa Clarita, qualified for the Rio Games with a U.S. Open record 53.28 seconds in the 100 free.

She will have more chances, swimming Wednesday in that individual event. On Friday, she competes in the 50 free.
