RIO DE JANEIRO >> Michael Phelps won his 20th Olympic gold medal Tuesday night, taking the 200-meter butterfly final.

Phelps’ powered to a 1 minute, 53.36 second clocking for his 24th overall Olympic medal.

Phelps charged into the lead in the second 50, opening up a 0.43 second lead by the halfway point, and then held off Japan’s Masato Sakai for the gold medal. Sakai finished in 1:53.40.

Katie Ledecky held off a late bid by Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to win the Olympic Games 200 meter freestyle final Tuesday night and capture her second gold medal of the Rio Games.

With her 1 minute, 53.73 victory, Ledecky is one victory away from being the first woman in nearly a half-century to sweep the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles in a single Olympic Games. Ledecky won the 400 gold medal Sunday.

Australia’s Emma McKeon took the race out in world record pace, leading after the first 50 with Ledecky in the middle of the pack. Ledecky struck in the third 50, opening an immediate lead.
