RIO DE JANEIRO >> Another Simone from suburban Houston made history in the Olympic pool Thursday night.
Simone Manuel, pride of Sugar Land, Texas became the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic title in swimming, tying Canadian teenager Pey Olesiak for the 100-meter freestyle gold medal at the Olympic Aquatics Center.
The pair touched the wall in an Olympic record 52.70 seconds.
Manuel’s victory came just hours after Simone Biles, a 19-year-old out of the north Houston suburb of Spring, won the Olympic all-around title.
