Trojans likely to determine starting quarterback on Sunday

LOS ANGELES >> After USC’s training camp commences Friday, the team will begin preparations for Alabama.

Coach Clay Helton said he plans to install game-week installation on Sunday, coinciding with the release of a two-deep depth chart and a decision as far as a starting quarterback.

“I’m looking forward to moving on to Alabama,” Helton said. “These guys have done a great amount of work,”

The Trojans next practice on Tuesday. They have Monday off for the first day of classes for the fall semester.

Scholarship awards

Helton aounced that USC has given scholarships to three walk-ons, safety Matt Lopes, fullback Reuben Peters and ruing back James Toland IV.

“All three men represent what we want the Trojan family to be,” Helton said.

The additions put the Trojans at the 85-scholarship limit.

Lopes is the son of Steve Lopes, USC’s chief operations officer and a senior associate athletic director.

Rally time

USC’s aual “Salute to Troy” booster function is scheduled for Friday night at Cromwell Field.

Last season, then-coach Steve Sarkisian appeared to be intoxicated when addressing the crowd, at one point using an explicative. He apologized a day later. Sarkisian was fired in October. He later filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the university in December. It reached arbitration in March.

The Trojans’ final scrimmage of training camp on Friday will run close to 80 plays, Helton said. He added that it would “solidify” a decision toward naming a starting quarterback, among other positions. ... Defensive tackle Noah Jefferson (back) participated in 11-on-11 drills for the first time in training camp. ... Defensive tackle Rasheem Green (knee contusion) and left guard Damien Mama (ankle) did not practice. ... Safety Ykili Ross and center Cole Smith returned after missing two days with a stomach illness. .. Safety John Plattenburg and cornerback Isaiah Langley remain out. Helton said they were in the team’s concussion protocol.
